Kids on the Internet: danah boyd’s controversial idea that kids should be allowed to roam free. - Slate Magazine
The important thing, boyd points out, is to give the kid the ability to handle choices, assess risks, and take what she calls “strategic” risks, or calculated risks. You want, in other words, to create the kid who can handle the Internet without you. And how can they become that kid if you are watching them all the time, if you are always hovering right there next to them? She says, “You don't just throw a 5-year-old out on the streets and tell her to figure it all out. The same is true online. But, equivalently, you can't expect to put under surveillance and control every action a child makes until she's 18 and then magically assume she'll be fine off at college when she hasn't had any experience managing her own decisions.”
The point, according to boyd, is not to create a safe world, but a safer world. Of course this is very fraught emotional territory, since it engages with the crucial and impossible fantasy that we can protect our children, that there is some way to seal them off from awful or painful or frightening things. Here I think of a line from one of boyd’s papers: “Our fears are amplified when they intersect with our insecurities and challenge our ability to be in control. Nowhere is this more palpable than when it comes a parent’s desire to protect their children.”

grecolaborativo
Grecolaborativo is a full-family collaboration, a couple creating with their young daughter and son. Our plush art and costumes, created under the name Lizette Greco, are based on the children's drawings and made using mostly thrifted and recycled materials. We also accept commissions for pieces using drawings from other children. Our aim is to create artwork that celebrates a child's perspective of the world and that will hopefully be passed from generation to generation.

For further information about our life in art, see our full profile. A more detailed explanation of how we work together can be found with the squids. We always have several projects brewing, and our family is very involved in the field of education — unschooling at home (one example) and through Rob's work at a progressive school. Jet-Lagged By Your Social Calendar? Better Check Your Waistline : The Salt : NPR
According to German researcher Till Roenneberg, the disconnect between our social calendars and our biological clocks is creating a kind of jet lag — he's dubbed it "social jet lag."

And the consequence? Expanding waistlines. "The larger the discrepancy between social time and what your biological clock tells you to do, the more likely it is you are [overweight or obese],"

Unlike others who suffer from neurological disorders, psychopaths and their families get little sympathy.
In the New York Times Magazine this weekend, Jennifer Kahn took a hard look at a mental disorder so disturbing that dealing with it honestly is incredibly rare: psychopathy. Many people probably aren't even aware that "psychopath" isn't just a term for someone with a crappy personality, but is a disorder that's believed to be biological in origin, where the sufferer just basically can't feel empathy. Kahn focused on the parents of fledgling psychopaths, parents whose situation should cause extreme sympathy, since attempts to treat this condition have largely been fruitless. from comments: "...have you ever met a psychopath? I'm betting that you have, you just didn't know it at the time. They can be very good at "playing human".

Can You Call a 9-Year-Old a Psychopath? - NYTimes.com
For the past 10 years, Waschbusch has been studying “callous-unemotional” children — those who exhibit a distinctive lack of affect, remorse or empathy — and who are considered at risk of becoming psychopaths as adults. To evaluate Michael, Waschbusch used a combination of psychological exams and teacher- and family-rating scales, including the Inventory of Callous-Unemotional Traits, the Child Psychopathy Scale and a modified version of the Antisocial Process Screening Device — all tools designed to measure the cold, predatory conduct most closely associated with adult psychopathy. (The terms “sociopath” and “psychopath” are essentially identical.) A research assistant interviewed Michael’s parents and teachers about his behavior at home and in school. When all the exams and reports were tabulated, Michael was almost two standard deviations outside the normal range for callous-unemotional behavior, which placed him on the severe end of the spectrum.

Currently, there is no standard test for psychopathy in children, but a growing number of psychologists believe that psychopathy, like autism, is a distinct neurological condition — one that can be identified in children as young as 5. Crucial to this diagnosis are callous-unemotional traits, which most researchers now believe distinguish “fledgling psychopaths” from children with ordinary conduct disorder, who are also impulsive and hard to control and exhibit hostile or violent behavior.

How to Measure a KPI | Small Business - Chron.com
Set the time period for measuring the KPI. You can choose between a repeating time period, a rolling time period or a fixed time period. A repeating time period takes place at intervals over a one-year period. For example, the KPI may be measured on a daily, weekly or monthly time interval over the course of the one-year period. A rolling time period measures over any continuous amount of time; for example, a snapshot of any 30-day period. A fixed time period is specific dates such as February 1 through February 28.

Fake Your Way to Happiness - Ideas Market - WSJ
Numerous studies have found that people who are natural extroverts tend to be happier than shyer types, but introverts can get a hedonic boost simply by faking it, it appears. And there doesn’t seem to be a downside.

After determining participants’ dispositions through questionnaires, psychologists assigned 117 people to three-person teams and gave them two make-work tasks (ranking the usefulness of tools after a wintertime plane crash, and planning a group day trip). Some participants were assigned to act boldly and assertively; others to be reserved and passive; still others (the control group) received no advice about how to act. Queried later, group members confirmed that people did, in fact, act as they were told to.

Whatever their innate tendencies, the people who acted like extroverts enjoyed the task the most, according self-reports, and they also seemed to be enjoying themselves, according to participants. The researchers had thought that acting against type would cause mental strain, but a subsequent test of concentration and cognition found no cost to introverts pretending to be gregarious knee slappers.

europe-v-facebook.org
According to European data protection law every individual has the right to get a copy of all personal data a company holds about him (right to access). This law is applicable to Facebook too. Every user with a residence outside of the US and Canada has a contract with “Facebook Ireland Limited”, based in Dublin, Ireland and has a right to access therefore.
(Again: Anyone outside of the US or Canada has a right to access!)

By sending an access request you get an idea about the use of your personal data by Facebook. It also shows Facebook that users care about their data and privacy.

How to download your data from Google and Facebook | News | guardian.co.uk
Any company based in the EU is obliged to give users all data it holds on them if requested. Google's EU-based subsidiaries don't process any user data, and so avoid this requirement, but for anyone outside the US and Canada, Facebook's Irish office holds masses of data.

This process is slow – people have reported getting a response as taking months – but will get the most complete response. The key issue is to write to Facebook at Facebook Ireland Ltd, Hanover Reach, 5-7 Hanover Quay, Dublin 2, Ireland, including proof of identity and a short letter saying what information you'd like.

Me and my data: how much do the internet giants really know? | Technology | guardian.co.uk
US users of the sites are out of luck: there's no legal right under US law to ask a company to hand over all the information it holds on you. Users do have some say in how much companies are allowed to take, usually contained in the terms of service. But EU citizens are in a better position – under Europe-wide data protection rules, anyone can send a written request for their full data and, for a small fee, the company has to ship it out, usually within 40 days.

Five Misunderstandings About Bullying - Ideas Market - WSJ
1. “Bullies” usually aren’t the source of the problem: They’re often a symptom of the problem. / 2. Not all meanness and cruelty is bullying: Bullying refers to repeated psychological, social and physical aggression propagated by those who are more physically or socially powerful. Addressing the role of power is critical to combating bullying. / 3. “Cyberbullying” has become an unnecessary distraction: Students consistently report that school bullying is still more common—and that it has a greater negative impact—than what happens online. / 4. When a child has been hurt, people want someone—or something—to blame, but rushing to prosecute purported bullies only undermines society’s ability to curb bullying. Teen suicides should prompt us to act. But enacting flawed legislation in memory or prosecuting teens’ peers shifts the onus of responsibility away from society onto individuals. / 5. Most anti-bullying assemblies are ineffective, and the messages of well-meaning advocates tend to fall on deaf ears. Teens don’t recognize most of the meanness and cruelty they witness or experience as bullying; they see it as drama, teasing or pranking.

The Fertility Implosion - NYTimes.com
If you look around the world, you see many other nations facing demographic headwinds. If the 20th century was the century of the population explosion, the 21st century, as Eberstadt notes, is looking like the century of the fertility implosion.

Already, nearly half the world’s population lives in countries with birthrates below the replacement level. According to the Census Bureau, the total increase in global manpower between 2010 and 2030 will be just half the increase we experienced in the two decades that just ended. At the same time, according to work by the International Institute of Applied Systems Analysis, the growth in educational attainment around the world is slowing.

This leads to what the writer Philip Longman has called the gray tsunami — a situation in which huge shares of the population are over 60 and small shares are under 30.

Why you’ll always think your product is shit | Andrew Chen (@andrewchen)
A company like Pixar, who undoubtedly produces some of the most beloved and polished experiences in the world, ultimately still cannot produce an outcome where everyone on the team thinks it is the best. And after thinking about why, the reason is obvious and simple – to have the foresight and the skill to refine something to the point of making it great also requires the ability to be hugely critical. More critical, I think, than your ability to even improve or resolve the design problems fast enough. And because design all comes to making a whole series of tradeoffs, ultimately you don’t end up having what you want.

The lesson: You’ll always be unhappy
What I took away from this conversation is that many of us working to make our products great will never be satisfied. A great man once said, your product is shit – and maybe you will always think it is. Yet at the same time, it is our creative struggle with what we do that ultimately makes our creations better and better. And one day, even if you still think your product stinks, you’ll watch a customer use it and become delighted.

Can meditation make you a better parent? | Life and style | guardian.co.uk

Pass the Books. Hold the Oil. - NYTimes.com
In sum, says Schleicher, “knowledge and skills have become the global currency of 21st-century economies, but there is no central bank that prints this currency. Everyone has to decide on their own how much they will print.” Sure, it’s great to have oil, gas and diamonds; they can buy jobs. But they’ll weaken your society in the long run unless they’re used to build schools and a culture of lifelong learning. “The thing that will keep you moving forward,” says Schleicher, is always “what you bring to the table yourself.”

Take the Subway - NYTimes.com
Moody, who works at Australia’s national research agency, and Nogrady, a science journalist, argue that, since the industrial revolution, we’ve seen five long waves of innovation — from water power to steam to electrification to mass production and right up to information and communications technologies. They argue the sixth wave will be resource efficiency — because rising populations, with growing appetites, will lead to both increasing scarcity of resources and dangerously high pollution, waste and climate change.

But FAQ’s are a different type of content. Just like search and sitemap, it has its own particularities and things that you can do to improve user experience. You have to keep in mind, for instance, that users don’t go to FAQ pages, you have to lead them there.

Here we’ll see a couple of thoughts about it, good practices, inspiration and tools.

The Long Goodbye - Features - Atlanta Magazine
We thought Daddy was going to die in 2001. He was staggering around the house in his underwear, gasping in pain, his eyes hollow, his face slashed from shaving with an old-fashioned safety razor. He was eighty-two years old. We took him to a doctor, who said his spine was deteriorating, gave him pills, and suggested he pray. A few days later, Daddy fell at the mailbox, bounced his head on the pavement, and crawled up the driveway, scraping the skin off his knees before collapsing on the front steps. Mama sat in her recliner in front of the TV, worried and clueless, until a neighbor called an ambulance. The EMTs got Daddy propped up in his recliner. He refused to go with them. When I arrived, Daddy was gulping down whiskey. I called the ambulance back, and they took him to DeKalb Medical. Doctors found prostate cancer and operated. My sister and I cried, sure Daddy was in his last days.

That was eleven years ago. Since then, Daddy’s long goodbye has drained his retirement income and life savings of more than $300,000.

Pretentious Title: How I Went From Writing 2,000 Words a Day to 10,000 Words a Day
When I told people at ConCarolinas that I'd gone from writing 2k to 10k per day, I got a huge response. Everyone wanted to know how I'd done it, and I finally got so sick of telling the same story over and over again that I decided to write it down here.

So, once and for all, here's the story of how I went from writing 500 words an hour to over 1500, and (hopefully) how you can too:

Community Management and Tumblr « The Sternberg Effect
Community Manager is a title that emerged from the evolutionary tar pits of social media, but has its definition varies from company to company, person to person. Tumblr’s community manager/editorial director/dinosaur aficionado, Christopher Price (Topherchris), has become something of a cult hero among the Tumblr user-base, infusing his abstract design and love of experimentation into his wildly popular Tumblr blog.

He says he’s not sure what it means to be a community manager, only that he “knows how to do it the Tumblr way.” The Tumblr way is one of the reasons the site continues to grow.

Stephansdom - Austria-Forum : Wissenssammlung Symbole

Why Pinterest Is Playing Dumb About Making Money - Alexis Madrigal - Technology - The Atlantic
1)We know Pinterest is driving truly massive traffic to retail sites, by some accounts more than YouTube, LinkedIn, and Google+ combined. It is, after all, a platform that's perfect for shopping!
2) We know Pinterest used SkimLinks to add affiliate links.
3) Affiliate links generate revenue.

Should this add up to chump change? Let's do the math just to get an order of magnitude estimate.

Commissions on sales for affiliate links vary widely, but they average around 5 percent. After SkimLinks cut, that'd be 3.75 percent (although SkimLinks says they can sometimes negotiate deals that would keep the percentage closer to the original number).

So, Pinterest has 10 million users. Let's say that the average across all of them is that they buy items valued at $10 in a month through affiliate links on Pinterest. That's $100,000,000 of sales for which Pinterest would get credit. That's $3.75 million in monthly revenue, or $45 million of annual revenue.

Who Really Invented the Web? Texas Trial Questions Tim Berners-Lee [VIDEO]
Berners-Lee famously created the first website in 1991. He also designed and built the first web browser, called simply WorldWideWeb (later renamed Nexus). Berners-Lee initially came up with the idea to join hypertext with the Internet while working at CERN in Europe and performed his work on a NeXT computer designed by Steve Jobs.

Don’t Fear the Internet
Are you a print designer, photographer, fine-artist, or general creative person? Do you have a shitty website that you slapped together yourself in Dreamweaver in that ONE web design class that you took in college? Do you not have a site at all because you’ve been waiting two years for your cousin to put it together for you? Well, we’re here to help. We know that you have little to no desire to do web design professionally, but that doesn’t mean that you want an ugly cookie-cutter site or to settle for one that hasn't been updated since Hackers was in theaters. Through short tutorial videos, you’ll learn how to take a basic wordpress blog and manipulate the css, html (and even some php!) to match your aesthetic. You’ll feel empowered rather than crippled by the internet and worst case scenario you’ll at least end up having a better idea of how professional web designers turn your design dreams into a reality on screen.

Google fined £415k in France for providing a free mapping tool | Econsultancy
Google has been fined £415,000 by a French court for offering Google Maps to businesses as a free service.

Bottin Cartographes successfully sued for the damages after claiming Google was abusing its dominant position and stifling competition against companies that charged for the service.

Google France and its parent company Google Inc. must now pay €500,000 in damages and interest to the French mapping company, plus a €15,000 fine.

A Paris court upheld a claim that Google’s strategy is to undercut competitors by temporarily swallowing the full cost of its maps service until it gains control of the market.

Seth's Blog: The pricing formula (S&S)
Story: The other half of the pricing formula is the story the price itself tells. A Prius at $40,000 or a Prius at $10,000 is the same car, but the price becomes a dominant part of the story. You can tell a story of value/cheapness/affordability, or a story of luxury. If you price your product or service near the median, you're telling no story at all with the price, giving you the chance to tell a story about some other element of what you sell.
