If you’re using a small drive, you can disable local backups with tmutil, like so:
sudo tmutil disablelocal
then later you can:
sudo tmutil enablelocal
osx
lion
tips
sudo tmutil disablelocal
then later you can:
sudo tmutil enablelocal
