Editorial - Climate Bill Out With a Whimper - NYTimes.com
On Thursday, the Senate majority leader, Harry Reid, abandoned the fight for meaningful energy and climate legislation. The Republicans — surprise — had been fiercely obstructionist. But the Democratic leaders let them get away with it, as did the White House. It has been weeks since President Obama spoke out about the need for a serious climate bill to address the very real danger of global warming and to lessen this country’s dependence on imported oil.

Arctic Drilling Proposal Advanced Amid Concern - NYTimes.com
A proposal to drill for oil in the Arctic Ocean as early as this summer received initial permits from the Minerals Management Service office in Alaska at the same time federal auditors were questioning the office about its environmental review process.

The approvals also came after many of the agency’s most experienced scientists had left, frustrated that their concerns over environmental threats from drilling had been ignored.

Stopping Deforestation, Greening Agriculture Better Than Carbon Capture & Storage, UNEP Report Says : TreeHugger
A new report from the UN Environment Programme says what many small-t treehuggers have been saying for quite some time: Stopping deforestation, restoring marshes and peatlands, and practicing more sustainable agricultural techniques are probably a better bet for combatting climate change, not to mention less expensive, than investing tens of billions of dollars in carbon capture and storage at power plants.

The Green Issue - Batteries Not Included - NYTimes.com
gassi’s grand plan is to kick-start the global adoption of electric cars by minimizing one of the biggest frustrations with the technology: the need for slow and frequent recharges. The robot is the key to his solution. Unlike most electric-car technologies, which generally require you to plug your car into a power source and recharge an onboard battery for hours, the Better Place robot is designed to reach under the chassis of an electric car, pluck its battery out and replace it with a new one
