The Daily Bell -- VIDEO: Put the Harridan Away
'Britain is quite mad. You know, we're not sure Rebekah Brooks was such a nice woman. But given the larger cruelties of the world and whom she apparently works for, the charges seem a bit exaggerated. Even the phone hacking. The crazy elite families have apparently been building a full matrix of eavesdropping facilities for the past 50 years. The idea that this young woman is going to be charged for something that governments around the world spend billions on every year is a bit rich.'

Wikipedia -- People's Budget
'The 1909 People's Budget was a product of then British Prime Minister H. H. Asquith's Liberal government, introducing many unprecedented taxes on the wealthy and radical social welfare programmes to Britain's political life. It was championed by Chancellor of the Exchequer David Lloyd George and his strong ally Winston Churchill, who was then President of the Board of Trade; the duo was called the "Terrible Twins" by contemporaries. Churchill's biographer, William Manchester, called the People's Budget "a revolutionary concept" because it was the first budget in British history with the expressed intent of redistributing wealth among the British public. -- More controversially, the Budget also included a proposal for the introduction of a land tax based on the ideas of the American tax reformer Henry George. This would have had a major effect on large landowners, and the Conservative-Unionist opposition, which consisted mostly of large landowners, had a large majority in the Lords.'

The Daily Bell -- DB Briefs: EU Crisis Is Real
'"Britain has become a zombie economy. Capital is no longer being allocated. – UK Telegraph" -- ...people (normal people) are aware of the elite money giveaways. To them it doesn't look like a substantive policy – it just looks like a bunch of rich people propping up "their" financial system. In fact, that's exactly right. This elaborate charade was presented with some level of dignity in the 20th Century but collapsed utterly in the 21st Century when the Internet exposed it. In a single decade, central banks have gone from possessing an almost religious aura to being a laughingstock. The elite still doesn't "get it." What's been lost is the moral justification. People see the central banking system as a scam now, even when they can't quite explain it. And that's what's going to kill it eventually.'

The Independent -- Camila Batmanghelidjh: Caring costs – but so do riots
'Walk on the estate stairwells with your baby in a buggy manoeuvring past the condoms, the needles, into the lift where the best outcome is that you will survive the urine stench and the worst is that you will be raped. The border police arrive at the neighbour's door to grab an "over-stayer" and his kids are screaming. British children with no legal papers have mothers surviving through prostitution and still there's not enough food on the table. It's not one occasional attack on dignity, it's a repeated humiliation, being continuously dispossessed in a society rich with possession. Young, intelligent citizens of the ghetto seek an explanation for why they are at the receiving end of bleak Britain, condemned to a darkness where their humanity is not even valued enough to be helped. Savagery is a possibility within us all. Some of us have been lucky enough not to have to call upon it for survival; others, exhausted from failure, can justify resorting to it.' -- London. The Daily Bell -- Iran's Press TV Comes Under Attack in Britain
'When covering the economy or military ventures, Western mainstream media often presents only part of the story – and that is easily understood if one checks alternative 'Net reports on the same issues. But today, at least two TV channels, Russia Today (RT) and Press TV, available in various cable packages, are providing provocative, fact-based reporting. It is a sad comment on Western programming that these two channels seem so good despite what would seem to be a relative paucity of resources. The suspicion is that Ofcom is getting ready not just to fine Press TV but also to make a case that Press TV ought to be banned from Britain. Likely, this will be the beginning of an effort to ban Press TV in America and Europe-proper as well. It won't do to have Iranian television blasting away while one is dropping bombs on Tehran, if that is the plan. In any event, if Press TV is banned for one reason or another, it will be Britain's loss and then perhaps the West's as well.'

The British government doesn't want this kind of information going viral in the public domain because it is scared stiff of a repeat of the infamous poll tax riots of 1990, a massive tax revolt in the UK that forced the Thatcher government to scrap the poll tax altogether because of mass civil disobedience and refusal to pay. The Daily Bell -- War Thy Name is David Cameron
'Dominant Social Theme: David Cameron is the leader of Britain, a nation state that represents the hopes and dreams of a hundred million. Thus Britain is in a sense a person too. And a person (Britain) run by David Cameron who is the leader of Britain, assumes Britain's errors and sins and can seek redemption for it. Therefore, it can be argued that the war against Libya is a redemptive one. And David Cameron is redeemed! Free-Market Analysis: Oh, boy. This article in the Telegraph attempts to argue that war is actually a form of political conversation. It has not-so-artfully reversed the reality of war so that the act of violence and murder somehow becomes an expression of redemption for David Cameron and Britain generally. There are so many dominant social themes that it is difficult to know where to start. The article seeks to turn Cameron into a metaphor for Britain. '...it is not the British people who are warlike, but their elites, the fabulously wealthy banking families ensconced in the square mile "City of Britain" that is its own state-within-a-state. Even the Queen of England bows her head before entering. It is here in this square mile (among other places to be sure) that the Anglosphere plots its world-spanning mischief and contemplates ways to install one-world government. Central banking was invented here; wars were planned here; the EU itself was plotted here. And the plotting continues. It is Cameron's job to put a pleasant face on the continued machinations and to disguise the damage they do. He is to decry the EU without destroying Britain's relationship to it; he is to implement austerity measures (that benefit the banks) and use his Big Society concept to blur the sacrifices that the British public is being told to make. 'This crisis in Britain's families has created an itinerant population of young people without support or a roof over their heads. The state has to provide, at an immense cost, while voluntary organisations try to plug the gaps in the face of drastic cutbacks and closures. Dispatches follows four teenagers over six months who are struggling to fend for themselves on the streets. They're simultaneously at risk and a risk to society, and for all four of them drugs become a way of life, a means of dealing with the stresses and challenges of life away from family and home comforts. All talk candidly and eloquently about why they take flight: family breakdowns, addiction, violence, neglect and abuse. The unspoken truth behind their stories points to both inadequate parenting and severe lack of consistent and effective care once they have left home.' -- "I feel like a beggar." '...now, in Britain, a further protest has been made. A bill has been introduced to support full-reserve banking. The gentleman who has done the introducing is Douglas Carswell and the idea that such a bill could be introduce in Britain – where many of the most powerful elite families congregate – is absolutely astounding. We are truly living in miraculous times. And yet it is perfectly possible that intellectual war being generated by the Internet has only just begun. The concepts of honest money – mentioned numerous times in the introduction to this bill – have only now begun to percolate once again. All across the West people are beginning to rediscover the intellectual heritage of humankind. The Anglo-American power elite has tended to downplay anything that did not directly enhance or support its goal of world domination, but much is being recovered now. Guardian -- The strange case of Lord James and 'Foundation X'
'This body, which he calls "Foundation X", apparently has huge reserves of gold bullion-backed funds. On some estimates, these funds amount to more than the entire gold bullion mined from the earth. With such great wealth, Foundation X is understandably secretive and only wishes to discuss the disbursement of its funds with a head of state or one of the "top six people in the world". So for 20 weeks, James investigated the foundation. He came to the conclusion that "Foundation X is completely genuine and sincere and that it directly wishes to make the United Kingdom one of the principal points that it will use to disseminate its extraordinarily great wealth into the world". It's tempting to think that James has been the victim of a particularly convincing Nigerian email scam. But if it is madness, it is madness that has reached the highest levels of government.'

These things can be done, if wished, but a senior member of the Government has to accept the invitation to a phone call to the chairman of foundation X—and then we can get into business. The Daily Bell -- Cameron and Sarkozy Build EU Army
'...neither the Tories nor Labour can afford politically simply to come out and say that the Anglo-American power elite, a handful of extraordinarily wealthy and dominant families and banking groups (among others), has decided to trade Britain in for Europe. But it has. The Brussels' based EU judiciary now has the power to try British citizens in abstentia and apparently to arrest them at will. Of course, through it all, the British political classes continue to make the right sounds about sovereignty... They've been making the same noises for 50 years, however, and one would think the British might start to see through it. The power of the Anglo-American elite remains pernicious when it comes to mainstream politics. There is only one true policy, which is increasing amounts of authoritarianism and globalization. In both Britain and America, the Left consolidates and nationalizes the economy while the Right pursues increasingly authoritarian policies at home and serial wars abroad.'

Now our ancestors were not daft, they knew there could be a problem one day if the crown became unjust, or turned into some sort of dictatorship, or parliament was acting against the people, or was full of corruption, or was not allowing the crown to keep its oath. So in article 61 of the Magna Carta it was written that if this ever happened you could petition the crown to sort out the crowns problem (or parliaments if it was them), the crown had 40 days to fix it or dissolve parliament. If in the 40 days nothing was fixed the petitioner could go into rebellion against the crown and parliament lawfully until the problem was resolved. The Daily Bell -- Cameron's Faux Austerity for Britain
'Is it a coincidence that the whole of the Western world is now speaking of austerity? After over 200 years of increasingly militant socialism and communism, public spending is no more. The speed with which socialist precepts are being abandoned is truly a spectacle to behold. In fact we are on record as stating that such a wholesale transmutation of Western society cannot be anything other than a promotion. The austerity that Cameron speaks of will prove a trap for Britain. One way or another it will not bring success or make Britain more prosperous. Somehow it will end up giving more power to the state while further denuding the private sector. People have been made to feel that the control of the state is theirs, but this is never so. The state is in the hands of the power elite and now the elite is attempting to further manipulate citizens under the guise of "austerity" and deflation. 'The American military-industrial complex is under considerable attack currently. One way to alleviate the pressure is to start another war, and that may be in the works already with Iran. Another way is to come up with a fresh idea as it involves support for the military from a personal perspective—each citizen looking deeply into his or her own conscience to decide that the troops (and their mission) deserve unquestioning allegiance. This is what Cameron has done. The idea that local municipalities ought to have more control over their own laws and budgets is fairly admirable, at least theoretically. Get involved, the British Prime Minister urges. Take control of your own lives again and the federal government shall help make this possible. Once in power, Cameron begins to deliver on this idea. But now it has changed. Support our troops, he urges. Do so at a local level. Empower yourself by giving your full encouragement to our boys over in Afghanistan. The cynicism is breathtaking.'

This religion is government, its ministers are politicians and its gospel is debt. -- Politicians have convinced us that everyone has a right to comfort and happiness and that government has moral duty to provide it. They believe that wealth and liberation come in the form of paper or electronic money and that distributing limitless amounts of this commodity is a cure for all social and economic ills. Only by spending this confiscated or borrowed money is a person truly moral. CNET UK -- Digital Economy Bill: Nine things you can't do any more
'#Change ISPs: French law prevents suspended users from switching to another ISP, and Ofcom is expected to come up with a similar provision. It's unclear who will be in charge of this blacklist -- a copyright offender register, if you will. How long will suspended users be kept on the list? Will it lapse after a set period of time, like a police caution? Will you be able to see your record, like a credit record? Either way, ISPs may find themselves forced to check each new user, which could make the process of signing up to a new ISP even more of a chore than it already is.'

The Daily Bell -- Obama Plots Open Borders
'Those who don't want unlimited amounts of South American and Mexican workers flooding the US—and gaining the privileges of citizenship in the process—are often characterized by the opposition as racist. South American citizens are essentially freedom loving and entrepreneurial, but many have grown up under authoritarian governments. What this means is that the US is to be continually flooded by hard working South Americans who have had little exposure to free-market thinking. Such individuals shall in some cases tend to favor a strong central government—whether it be in their own country or America. It is this sentiment that mainstream leaders (of both parties) are counting on. [Assuming a fully privatized society, workers] would either find gainful employment or go back home. This is how the private market would regulate immigration. It is the politicization of immigration and distortive factors such as welfarism—and a general public government involvement—that causes problems.'

Land Value Taxation Campaign -- Which part of a house is unaffordable?
'"Unaffordable housing" The term still keeps cropping up. Which part of a house is not affordable? The roof? The bricks? The drains? The roofing tiles? The plumbing system? The amount builders have to be paid to put it all together? -- Too many have stood aside, not watched what is going on in the world and failed to try and make sense of it. Hence the talk about "unaffordable house prices" Anyone who uses the phrase "unaffordable house prices" without further explanation is guilty of extreme mental laziness. Which is most of us, and now we are living with the consequences of our neglect. This of course includes the Nationwide Building Society, which would do everyone a good turn if they scrapped their so-called House Price Index and replaced it with a housing Land Price Index.'

The Independent -- Election 2010: Debt - A conspiracy of silence
'The debt that Britain faces is monstrous, and neither Tories nor Labour will admit it. They prefer to quibble about the small change than admit that they are taking part in, in effect, a conspiracy on the British people. To make it worse, much of the media is allowing them to get away with it, presumably because they think – as the politicians seem to believe – that the public doesn't want to hear the bad news. In short, we are complicit in a con. Put simply, in the past year for every pound of receipts the Government spent £1.36p. And the gap is filled by borrowing. That gap is roughly £180bn a year. Wow. So how can we get out of this financial hole before our creditors get to us? There are three ways to reduce our national debt: let inflation rip to destroy the debt [stealing from all incomes and savings]; increased tax revenues from higher taxes and economic growth [does not compute]; cut government spending. [Yes, and...]' -- #4 Tax reform: shift taxation off income and onto land.

CynicusEconomicus -- Fiscal Chickens Coming Home to Roost
'Whilst the mainstream economists make their projections of future GDP growth, what is notably absent from such projections is exactly where, or what sector, might conceivably produce such growth. Apparently, growth will just happen, because it just must. It might be noted that I am not talking about the so-called 'growth' which results from massive government borrowing, which is really just a growth in debt. -- The cost of pensions and health care are, due to demographic factors, and the rising cost of health care, about to explode. At this very moment in time, governments should not be running deficits, but running surpluses to fund these future costs. ...politicians are living in a world of fantasy, and the bond markets have recognised this. Both Labour and the Conservatives are just not telling the truth - that there must be real austerity, and that the UK is on the edge of a precipice.'

The Daily Bell -- How the Internet Dies?
'It seems that numerous people are now aware of the centralizing tendencies of the modern Western sociopoliticial model. ...it will be interesting to see how the powers-that-be in Britain attempt to apply censorship techniques aimed at the Net and justify it. TalkTalk has apparently now announced that it will not follow the more draconian aspects of the law. The chances of British businesses and consumers meekly submitting to what is being planned is unlikely. Censorship rarely works as intended and what is censored by the state usually ends up being in more demand. In the case of Britain, we wonder how much more that previously open society can take before there is a backlash. Between the public cameras, the draconian fines and prison sentences for putting one's garbage in the wrong place or even defending oneself against home invasion, British society seems to us increasingly on the wrong track. Such a journey, history shows us, is not unstoppable, nor is the destination inevitable.'

Guardian -- Videogame tax breaks: does this mean games are acceptable now?
'...the key concept here is pervasiveness. A growing trend in digital design at the moment is gamification—the addition of ludic elements to just about every form of communication. These days, if a charity or NGO really wants to engage people with its cause, it commissions a game. Two weeks ago, for example, the World Bank launched a multiplayer challenge entitled Evoke in which gamers compete to solve key world crises such as disease, conflict and climate change. Think about how tourist attractions could encourage multiple visits by granting a 'Mayorship' to their most frequent repeat visitor - with the Mayor getting benefits and discounts, etc. These services could potentially harness people's competitive nature to powerful effect." This is why videogames can no longer be ostracized from the cultural agenda – because in a lot of ways there are an intrinsic part of that agenda.' -- Tax breaks? Cultural agenda? DB's draft curriculum introduction: 'Dear British Schoolchildren: "Welcome to your course on learning to handle money. Before we get started with the basics, it is important that you understand the larger frame of reference when it comes to money. What you need to know, dear children, is that Britain is not yours. It belongs for the most part to a few very powerful individuals. These individuals do not care much for Britain even though they lead it and own it. In fact, they are trying to do away with Britain, or at least British power. They wish for Britain to be subordinate to larger powers - specifically the EU. The EU is a creature of the Anglo-American empire and like a vampire, the EU is being positioned to sink its teeth into Britain's neck and drain its commerce, energy and ambition slowly, almost imperceptibly until Britain is no more. 'At some point, the factories in Asia supplying goods into the developed world will need to restructure such that they no longer are reliant on servicing the credit fuelled portion of the developed world economy. In the credit fuelled countries, all of the jobs and services that are derived from overseas credit must also disappear. -- The foolishness, the denial of reality and the extreme policy that the denial has generated, has brought the world to the brink of an economic disaster. If the UK should topple, as is looking increasingly likely as the UK election unfolds, it is very likely that it will commence the final stage of the economic crisis. ...the flashpoints for a savage deepening of the crisis are multiplying. The UK is moving closer to the brink, and we now have to wait and see whether those reliant on the state, those bribed by the state, might stand back and make a hard choice. The Daily Bell -- Shrinking Freedom in Britain
'All the focus seems to be on politics, now, on the endless British obsession with class structure, various accents and, of course, politically correct egalitarianism. If one reads the British press, it seems like one can never get away from analyses of the policies of the country's former prime minister Tony Blair and now the pitiless Gordon Brown, who has aimed his great, munching jaws at what is left of the genius of British life and culture. The troubles with Britain go beyond the leadership, though, and seem to raise questions about British citizens themselves. The country, especially under New Labour, has tolerated tremendous erosions of freedom seemingly without a murmur. On the whole, the British populace seems content to sink into the morass of socialism and authoritarianism without much of an (visible) outcry. -- ...we believe that the socialist permafrost that has seemingly overlaid British aspirations for freedom will eventually thaw.' -- Four! Telegraph -- Europe's banks brace for UK debt crisis
'"I am becoming convinced that Great Britain is the next country that is going to be pummelled by investors," said Kornelius Purps, Unicredit 's fixed income director and a leading analyst in Germany. Mr Purps said the UK had been cushioned at first by low debt levels but the pace of deterioration has been so extreme that the country can no longer count on market tolerance. "Britain's AAA-rating is highly at risk. The budget deficit is huge at 13pc of GDP and investors are not happy. The outgoing government is inactive due to the election. There will have to be absolute cuts in public salaries or pay, but nobody is talking about that." Big global banks are divided over Britain's economic prospects. Goldman Sachs is betting on a turbo-charged recovery as the delayed effects of sterling devaluation kick in. Britain's trump card is an average debt maturity of 14.1 years, nearly three times US maturities and double those of France. This greatly reduces the risk of a "roll-over" crisis.'

Guardian -- The bankers lied. And Darling, a mere puppet on their string, knows it by Simon Jenkins
'Still no inquiry. Still no answers. A trillion pounds has been devoted over the past 18 months to protect Britain's financial system from alleged Armageddon, with not a murmur of value for money. This stupefying sum is more than has ever been spent on any project by any government in British history. We know where the money came from but we do not know if it was necessary, nor who now has it. We know only that, a year on, Britain is experiencing a worse recession than any comparable country. The lack of accountability, the sheer lack of curiosity from the political community, is amazing. Too big to fail has taken a savage toll on the economy. If it was worth it, I would like to see the account. If not, someone should pay. Telegraph -- Hugh Hendry: We hedge fund managers are on your side
'Hedge funds are not seeking to dictate economic affairs. Rather we are preoccupied by price. A market-based economy requires a pricing mechanism to allocate resources and ensure that we all prosper. [W]e believe that recurring and periodic recessions reveal the economy's winners and losers. And through our endeavours, hedge funds attempt to discover the identity and inadequacies of the poor businesses. Fearing that the huge scale of reckless bets within the banking system threatened another depression, our politicians have used public funds to bail out the economy's losers. [I]n doing so they run the danger of creating a plutocracy: a society ruled by the wealthy. We need to stop this socialisation of risk taking. The Daily Bell -- Solution to Economic Crisis - Pretty Wallpaper?
'Britain's educational system, health care system, media (state-run BBC) and economic system are dysfunctional to one degree or another. The country, according to its mainstream press, is teetering on the verge of bankruptcy and yet the spending continues. The central bank has screwed rates down as low as they can go, flooding the country with cheap money but the economy remains stubborn moribund... The solution, obviously, is to put false facades on empty commercial real estate in order to create the pretense of prosperity where none exists. -- ...once the "messaging" of the elite is exposed, the ability to leverage social control erodes. The result may then be the implementation of military conflict and other more malevolent mechanisms including domestic repression aimed at harassing and distracting an increasingly resentful and disbelieving populace. 'In recent years Britain has become the Willy Wonka of social control, churning out increasingly creepy, bizarre, and fantastic methods for policing the populace. The weaponization of classical music speaks volumes about the British elite’s authoritarianism and cultural backwardness. They’re so desperate to control youth—but from a distance, without actually having to engage with them—that they will film their every move, fire high-pitched noises in their ears, shine lights in their eyes, and bombard them with Mozart. And they have so little faith in young people’s intellectual abilities, in their capacity and their willingness to engage with humanity’s highest forms of art, that they imagine Beethoven and Mozart and others will be repugnant to young ears. The Daily Bell -- Buffet's Partner Says America Is Finished
'We would argue that the problems America faces go back a long ways. They have to do in fact with the creation of the Federal Reserve, the graduated income tax, the growth of the federal government, the empowerment of the executive branch, the loss of power of the states and the rise of America's mighty military industrial complex which has supported the generation of nearly 1,000 military bases around the world. -- America is truly an empire, though one can make the argument it is a bifurcated empire that includes Britain as well. One can also make an argument that an intergenerational power elite has worked patiently to hollow out what once was a republic with an eye toward creating a larger, international structure supported by America's military might. It is this perspective that we find lacking in Munger's parable. -- Wall Street is a symptom not a cause...
