"What a lovely mix. If you have not seen Chaplin’s THE GREAT DICTATOR you would do well to get right on that. It’s really a wonderful film."

Nelson's Weblog: culture / fisk-mississippi-slippy-map
"The map is truly a beautiful bit of geologic history. For more info on it, see my previous blog post. So many amazing swirls and details in the river's course. Rendering it as a slippy map makes it easy to see the map in great detail, for instance the Old River Control Structure, a site threatened by the floodwaters of 2011. (Interestingly, the modern channel was built on relatively dry land.) The opacity slider (or text box) in the upper right lets you look through the Fisk map to a contemporary Google map. Check out this flood plain, for example. The satellite view contains echoes of the various old meanders, too, like these curved fields."

The group ended up recording a 6 song album, “Nighty Night,” in the space of 12 hours. You can listen to the full record streaming on Amanda Palmer’s site.

The Creative Commons-released material and somewhat egalitarian nature of the project has led to the online SFF and rock communities picking up the music and using it to craft their own original works. Below the cut, we list the coolest videos that have grown out of the project so far!

stevenberlinjohnson.com: The Glass Box And The Commonplace Book
"WHEN TEXT IS free to combine in new, surprising ways, new forms of value are created. Value for consumers searching for information, value for advertisers trying to share their messages with consumers searching for related topics, value for content creators who want an audience. And of course, value to the entity that serves as the middleman between all those different groups. This is in part what Jeff Jarvis has called the “link economy,” but as Jarvis has himself observed, it is not just a matter of links. What is crucial to this system is that text can be easily moved and re-contextualized and analyzed, sometimes by humans and sometimes by machines."

Steal This Footage
"Finally, in the spirit of cooperation and sharing, and by agreement with our interviewees, we are making this footage available to others who want to make films on this subject, and who may not have the resources to travel to and meet these exceptional individuals. We hope the HDV Torrents we have provided are of sufficient quality. If you have any issues, please contact us.

Steal This Film is a work in progress, incomplete, open to contradiction and response. The task of talking back to our point of view is one we leave at the feet of you, the viewers, users and produsers of the film."
