Brendan's blog » Top 10 DTrace scripts for Mac OS X
10 weeks ago by Vaguery
"Standard performance analysis tools like Activity Monitor and top(1) (and any third-party tools based on the same foundation) can’t tell you some key information about activity on your system, such as how much CPU consumption is caused by short-lived processes, or which processes are causing disk I/O. DTrace, however, can see (just about) everything.
In this post, I’ll cover the top ten Mac OS X DTrace scripts that I use for figuring out why laptops are slow or why applications are misbehaving. Most of these scripts are already installed, a few are from the new DTrace book."

A Day in the life of Cheap Impostor
june 2011 by Vaguery
"This weekend I decided I wanted to learn about the new stuff in Java 1.5. Generics, auto-boxing/unboxing, etc. This is the kind of reading that works best for me in a printed book.
Fortunately for me (and for Cheap Impostor), Sun's official Java Language Specification is available as a free PDF file, with license given to each user to print one copy."

Noodlesoft: Hazel FAQ
june 2011 by Vaguery
"In general, Hazel can monitor any folder but keep in mind that certain folders may not be good candidates. For instance, P2P and other apps that might download a file slowly, may have their files moved before they are completely downloaded. In cases like this, it is best if the program has an option to download to one folder then move them automatically to another (Transmission has such an option). This second folder is the one you should have Hazel monitor.
Hazel does have special support for Safari, Camino, Firefox, Mail and Speed Download and knows how to identify when their downloads are complete. We will be adding support for more apps as time goes on so if you have a favorite app of yours you would like supported, please let us know and we'll look into adding support."

TidBITS Safe Computing: An Introduction to File Encryption in Mac OS X
april 2010 by Vaguery
"This article is an excerpt from Chapter 13, "Encrypting and Securely Deleting Files," reprinted with the kind permission of Wiley. File encryption is of course just one tiny piece of the security puzzle, but it's worth knowing about if you keep confidential data on your Mac, especially if the computer is ever out of your physical control - which would include being lost or stolen."

FAQ: LaTeX on OSX - Adam Lindsay
august 2009 by Vaguery
"And, I wouldn't be true to myself if I didn't plump for the ConTeXt macro package as an alternative to LaTeX. If you want to write up a structured document, but it's not for a conference proceedings or journal, I would say that it's more worth putting the time in to learn the basics of ConTeXt than, say, the Memoir class in LaTeX. ConTeXt's way of separating form from content feels much cleaner than LaTeX, and I feel like the learning curve for ConTeXt has a fairly constant and gentle slope, rather than a hockey-stick-like bend for when you want to customise a Class file."

Bee Docs Timeline - Movie: "What's New in March '09"
june 2009 by Vaguery
"One of the most popular ways for our customers to present their timelines is using Apple's Keynote software that is part of the iWork suite. Previously Bee Docs Timeline would create Keynote slides using still images of your timeline.
Now, you can quickly create full motion slides in Keynote. Each slide shows the 3D transition from one event to the next so that you can present your timeline at your own pace or even layout text and graphics on top of your timeline at appropriate places."
