Allgemeiner und besonders ... Google Books

311 Online Service Request Map
So *potentially* interesting, and yet implemented in such a bizarre way that it becomes completely useless

MetaFilter comment: Signs: The most useful thing you pay no attention to
Mostly just a note to self to follow up with this poster - it looks like data here to support an assertion I've been making for years, and which is vital to my book. Every extension is also an amputation.

Map Kibera
And, completely coincidentally: "Kibera, widely known as Africa's largest slum, remains a blank spot on the map. Without basic knowledge of the geography of Kibera it is impossible to have an informed discussion on how to improve the lives of residents of Kibera. Young Kiberans will create the first public digital map of Kibera." Via Migurski.

Out-of-Home Research: Methodological Research
Includes, inter many alia, notes on OSCAR (Outdoor Site Classification and Audience Research) system (1985) providing "gross audience estimates for individual outdoor poster sites/visibility-adjusted audience estimates for each poster, based on visits to each of the available 67,000 poster sites to record physical characteristics...and vehicle and pedestrian counts at a representative sample of 600 sites."

stamen design: MSNBC hurricane maps are live
Well hot damn. This is a very, very visceral thing the Stamens have done. Seriously, MSNBC or some other smart outfit should simply retain them to do all (election, weather event, complex multivariate situation) graphics. It would change the everyday understanding of such events, I'd stake my last euro on it. [See also http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26295161?preferredName=Gustav ]

BBC News: Online maps 'wiping out history'
This is important and, I believe, true - but happily, very far from irreversible.

Space Syntax: "Space Is The Machine"
Complete download of Bill Hillier's odd-ass (excuse me: "idiosyncratic") approach to developing an urban pattern language. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_syntax for more.
