As mentioned in the comments, if you have this problem then take a look at streamgraphs too. The Byron/Wattenberg paper is very well considered.

Data in, Brilliance Out | Tableau Public
Tableau goes web-based! Seems cleaner than ManyEyes, possibly less adventurous with the chart/viz types, but more adventurous with interaction and brushing. The maps are solid, and there are some lovely options for lineweights. Embedding works well, and the server-side rendering also seems to be working out for them.

Impressive round-up of the good moves Google have made this year, and the philosophy that the idealists there hope will win out. Still struggle to trust them as I inherently have no respect for the motives of an advertising company... but dataliberation.org and similar moves should be applauded without reservation.

International Journal of Health Geographics | On the use of ZIP codes and ZIP code tabulation areas (ZCTAs) for the spatial analysis of epidemiological data
"Caution must be exercised when using spatially referenced data, particularly that which is attributed to ZIP codes and ZCTAs, for epidemiological analysis. Researchers should be cognizant of representational errors associated with both geographies and their resulting spatial mismatch, especially when comparing the results obtained using different topological representations."
