The Coming Virtual Web
Ever since Neal Stephenson published Snow Crash in 1992, the virtual world he described in his seminal dystopian novel has been the Holy Grail for a generation of tech whizzes. The metaverse, as Stephenson called it, was essentially the Internet.
But in place of the flat, two-dimensional World Wide Web that had just been invented, he imagined a completely immersive and highly social 3D online world. People's avatars, or virtual representations of themselves, could interact using facial expressions and body language so richly textured that for many the metaverse became more compelling than the real world.

Cloud computing - Wikipedia
Cloud computing means Internet ('Cloud') based development and use of computer technology ('Computing'). It is a style of computing where IT-related capabilities are provided “as a service”[1], allowing users to access technology-enabled services "in the cloud"[2] without knowledge of, expertise with, or control over the technology infrastructure that supports them[3]. According to the IEEE Computer Society it "is a paradigm in which information is permanently stored in servers on the Internet and cached temporarily on clients that include desktops, entertainment centers, table computers, notebooks, wall computers, handhelds, etc."[4].

chumby
So, what's chumby anyway?
chumby plays your selected content

Chumby takes your favorite parts of the Internet and delivers them to you in a friendly, always-on, always-fresh format. It's a window into your Internet life that lives outside your desktop, so content like weather, news, celebrity gossip, podcasts, music, and more has a place to play away from your world of documents and spreadsheets. Just plug in your chumby, connect to your wireless network, and use your computer to create a lineup of favorites from over 800 widgets in 30 different categories, with new ones arriving all the time. Then let your chumby do its thing—streaming everything you like, from sports scores to stock tips, from video clips to interactive games, from photos to trivia.

An Internet of Things
As the idea of the Internet expands to include light bulbs, kitchen appliances, and doors; we will see a shift in what we consider the computer to be as well. Today I can buy a Chumby (see the cute little guy in the picture to the left) and put it on my nightstand. It’s an alarm clock, an Internet radio, a box with widgets flowing in over the Internet. I can check my Twitter account, my Facebook notifications and catch up on the latest news, weather and stock prices; and all before I roll out of bed in the morning. In the near future, this might all be embedded in your bathroom mirrors. So while you shave or put on your make up, you will read your blogs and watch a web cam pointing at a peaceful lake setting.
