Offline Wiki
january 2012 by Seumas
This application saves and downloads a copy of nearly all of the textual content of the English Wikipedia locally so that it can be accessed without internet connectivity. It downloads and saves a compressed dump file and an index, 14MB for the small version and 1GB for the larger one (you can select which one from the settings). Using WebWorkers and the File API, it seeks to a specific part of the compressed dump, decompresses it with a pure javascript implementation of LZMA and renders the Wikitext as HTML. All of this happens almost instantly.

SSHFS on Mac OS X 10.6.8 and 10.7.2 with Fuse4X » Philipp Klaus's Computing Blog
december 2011 by Seumas
Fuse4X is a port of FUSE – The Filesystem in Userspace to Mac OS X and allows you to mount all different kinds of remote / local filesystems on you Mac computer. A very popular ‘filesystem’ is sshfs, which allows you to mount a directory of a remote server to a local mountpoint (which is also a folder). You need to have access to the remote server via SSH to make this work.

Glasnost: Test if your ISP is shaping your traffic
april 2011 by Seumas
The goal of the Glasnost project is to make ISPs' traffic shaping policies transparent to their customers. To this end, we designed Glasnost tests that enable you to check whether traffic from your applications is being rate-limited (i.e., throttled) or blocked.
Glasnost tests work by measuring and comparing the performance of different application flows between your host and our measurement servers. The tests can detect traffic shaping in both upstream and downstream directions separately. The tests can also detect whether application flows are shaped based on their port numbers or their packets' payload. For more details on how Glasnost tests work, please read our NSDI 2010 paper.
We configured our tests to be conservative when declaring the presence of shaping, i.e., passing our tests does not necessarily mean that there is no throttling occurring on your link.

Getting started with Autotest - Continuous Testing
april 2011 by Seumas
Why manually run your tests, when the computer can do it for you! Autotest is a great tool to speed up test-driven development with Ruby or Ruby on Rails.
Autotest makes your coding session even more productive as it automatically runs a subset of your test suite each time you change a file. Autotest is smart – it figures out which subset to run based on the files you’ve changed. Think of it as Continuous Testing.
Autotest source code is well-documented (rdoc) but finding a high level overview online is a little more challenging. This article will get you up and running in no time, so that you may concentrate on writing code. Let’s get Started!

mkclean tool | Matroska
march 2011 by Seumas
mkclean is a command line tool to clean and optimize Matroska (.mkv / .mka / .mks / .mk3d) and WebM (.webm / .weba) files that have already been muxed. It reorders the elements with the Cues at the front, so your Matroska files are ready to be streamed efficiently over the web. It also removes elements not found in the Matroska specs and the extra Meta Seek list of Clusters that some program add to their file. It can also optionally remux the Cluster blocks to start each boundary with a keyframe and the matching audio/subtitle blocks for that keyframe.
Also comes with mkWDclean to modify files in a way they can play in broken/incomplete players.

RVM: Ruby Version Manager - RVM Ruby Version Manager - Documentation
march 2011 by Seumas
RVM allows users to deploy each project with its own completely self-contained and dedicated environment--from the specific version of ruby all the way down to the precise set of required gems to run the application. Having a precise set of gems also avoids the issue of version conflicts between projects, causing difficult-to-trace errors and hours of hair loss. With RVM, NO OTHER GEMS than those required are installed. This makes working with multiple complex applications where each has a long list of gem dependencies efficient. RVM allows us to easily test gem upgrades by switching to a new clean set of gems to test with while leaving our original set intact. It is flexible enough to even have a set of gems per environment or development branch--or even individual developer's taste!

7stacks | Alastria Software
march 2011 by Seumas
7stacks is an easy to use, free app that lets Windows 7 (and Vista and XP) users have “stacks” of icons in their Taskbar (in 7) or QuickLaunch Toolbar (in Vista and XP). By using stacks, users can reduce icon clutter, and combine a group of related icons into a single icon. For instance, if you use application suites such as Microsoft Office, OpenOffice, or Adobe CS4, you can have all the suite’s icons combined into one icon!
You can also use it to browse and access documents within a folder very quickly. Usually, when you want to edit a series of frequently used documents, you’d have to either launch the app, and go to File|Open, or open the (My) Computer icon and go into your (My) Documents folder and pick the file you want. With 7stacks, just create a stack to that document’s folder, and open that document in a couple of clicks.

Chapter 17 Backing Up and Restoring Calendar Server Data (Sun Java System Calendar Server 6.3 Administration Guide)
march 2011 by Seumas
If you have chosen not to use the automatic backup facility provided by Calendar Server (using csstored), then you need to implement a backup procedure to protect your data. This chapter describes how to use Calendar Server tools and other Sun tools to perform a manual backup and restore of calendar database files.
To back up and restore Calendar Server data in the /var/opt/SUNWics5/csdb directory, use these command-line utilities:
The csbackup command backs up the calendar database, a specific calendar, or a user’s default calendar. The directories to be backed up must be owned by the runtime user (icsuser), or you will receive an error message when you attempt to restore the data.
The csrestore command restores the calendar database, individual calendars, or a user’s default calendar that was saved using csbackup.

Chapter 16 Administering Calendar Server Databases with the csdb Utility (Sun Java System Calendar Server 6.3 Administration Guide)
march 2011 by Seumas
Calendar Server keeps many database files in multiple directories. You must protect your database files either by implementing the automatic back up process described in Chapter 9, Configuring Automatic Backups (csstored), or by implementing your own system of backups. You can administer the database files using the csdb utility.
This chapter describes how to manage Calendar Server databases using the csdbutility, and includes the following sections:
16.1 Using the csdb Utility to Manage Calendar Databases
16.2 Administering Databases with the csdb Utility

A Tarsnap-Alike for Private Storage – Blog - Synctus
march 2011 by Seumas
ddar is inspired by Tarsnap, an online backup service. Tarsnap is brilliant in its simplicity. Tarsnap has made obsolete the need to manage incrementals and other forms of complex inter-backup dependencies.
ddar uses the same simple snapshot paradigm as Tarsnap: each backup is a full backup that exists as a first-class object in its own right. Optimisation of redundancy is managed automatically without leaking this abstraction. ddar can be used like Tarsnap for local operation.
