Chutzpah - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Chutzpah (play /ˈhʊtspə/) is the quality of audacity, for good or for bad, but it is generally used positively. The Yiddish word derives from the Hebrew word ḥuṣpâ (חֻצְפָּה), meaning "insolence", "audacity". The modern English usage of the word has taken on a broader meaning, having been popularized through vernacular use in film, literature, and television. The word has also been able to be interpreted as meaning the amount of spunk or ability that an individual has.

Bartsidee Repository houses a lot of apps that needs maintenance, also a boxee repository needs lots of bandwidth. (boxee downloads a single app, 1 to 3 mb, on regular interval to keep it up to date) I have noticed that regular donations do not seem to cover my costs and time I’ve spent into this. Because of this my personal repository (creative playground) is now blocked by default and it is required to make a donation before you can access it.
You can make a single donation, but as I do not want this commercialized in any way and keep it easy accessible for everybody, you can also make a symbolical donation on a monthly basis of $1. (actually $0.33 is paypal fee) This allows me to pay my hosting bills and buy me some soda while I give support to the apps in my spare time.

Mizage · Divvy · Window Management at its Finest
october 2011
Managing windows on Mac OS X can be frustrating, requiring precision control of your mouse or trackpad for clicking, dragging, pushing and pulling your windows to the size and position you desire. Even with all this work, it’s very difficult to get windows exactly where you want them, so most of the time windows are left scattered all over the screen. The solution? Divvy.
Divvy is an entirely new way of managing your workspace. It allows you to quickly and efficiently "divvy up" your screen into exact portions.
With Divvy, it’s as simple as a single click and drag in the Divvy interface and your window will be resized and moved to a relative portion of the screen. If that seems like too much work, you can go ahead and create as many different shortcuts as you'd like that resize and move your windows.
Divvy is designed to be quick, simple and elegant. We want it to stay out of your way as much as possible while providing the most powerful window management available today.
Take a look at the screencast over there to the right to get a better idea of what we're talking about, then go ahead and download the demo to try it out for yourself. Or you could buy it right away. That's fine too.

Duncan Davidson’s Sweet Mac Setup — Shawn Blanc
october 2011
Who are you, what do you do, etc…?
I’m Duncan Davidson and I am a photographer, writer, and recovering software developer. Possibly my most recognizable affiliation is as the main stage photographer for TED. I’ve been exploring video and learning all I can, including bridging between stills and motion with a lot of time-lapse work, such as my recent Tribute in Light project. Finally, I’m a partner in Luma Labs which makes some awesome camera slings.
What is your current setup?
My desktop is an eight-core, early-2008 Mac Pro with 14GB of RAM, an upgraded ATI 4870 video card, an SSD boot drive in the bottom DVD drive bay, and 24TB of online storage across several arrays, both internal and external.
My primary display is a late-2008 24″ LED Cinema display. Tunes are pumped out through a set of old school USB Harman Kardon SoundSticks. Input is handed using an Apple Bluetooth Keyboard and Magic Trackpad and a Wacom Intous 4 tablet. For voice input, I use an Audio Technica AT2050 microphone hooked up to an Apogee One, and I monitor on a pair of Audio Technica ATH-M40fs headphones.
Document scanning is handed with a Fujitsu SnapScan. Photographs are scanned with an Epson v500 flatbed scanner. Most of my print needs are handled by an Epson 3880 printer, but for bigger jobs I also have a 24″ HP Z3200.
My primary laptop unless I’m in the throes of heavy photo or video work is a mid-2011, 13″ MacBook Air with 4GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. I went with the i5 instead of the i7 in the hope of getting the maximum battery life possible.
My secondary laptop which I pull out when I need to use FireWire drives on the road or when I know that the GPU will come in handy is a late-2008, 15″ MacBook Pro that I’ve upgraded to 4GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. This laptop is almost effectively retired, but not quite.
An iPhone 4 keeps me connected most of the time. A first generation iPad is what you’ll find me using on the couch or in seat 6A when I’m traveling.
Why this rig?
A desktop-plus-portable strategy is the only one that can satisfy my need for power, speed, and storage at home while also keeping things as light as possible for when I’m traveling fast. If I could go with a simpler setup, I would in a heartbeat. So far, however, the trend has been that my storage needs are ramping up quickly over time and dealing with over a TB a year of new data is the big challenge.
On the other hand, nothing beats being able to throw my MacBook Air and a Fuji X100 into a small bag and head out the door for a day or a weekend.
What software do you use and for what do you use it?
I manage my photographs using a combination of Aperture, Lightroom and Bridge. Aperture is taking over my primary catalog needs from Lightroom. I use Bridge when I need to scour through the archives of photographs that aren’t in my active catalog.
When I need more in the way of photo editing tools than I get from Aperture, I use Photoshop. When I need less, I use Acorn and sometimes even Preview.
For video, I use Final Cut Pro X and love it. I also use Compressor and After Effects for various tasks, including stitching together still frames into video clips.
When I’m in code mode, I use BBEdit or Xcode depending on the task at hand. For straight ahead writing—including all of my blog entries as well as the writing that currently isn’t seeing the light of day—I’ve become a huge fan of iA Writer.
To get things done, I use OmniFocus. At least I try. Sometimes I do better than others. Keeping all of my non-media data in sync between machines in handled by Dropbox. 1Password is essential for passwords. Mail, iCal, Safari, Numbers, and Pages are all open on my computer right now.
How does this setup help you do your best creative work?
For the most part, it lets me do what I need to do in the kinds of environments I like to be in.
At home, I’ve arranged my desk so that when I’m working on my desktop, I can look up across my living room and out my huge living room windows across downtown Portland. Watching the weather go by is therapeutic to me. The MacBook Air lets me work in cafés near home and as well as anywhere in the world. It’s even useful for the kinds of light photo editing I do on the road.
How would your ideal setup look and function?
I’m pretty close to my ideal right now. If I could change anything, I’d have a view of midtown Manhattan out my window from 25 floors up and I’d have a 15″ MacBook Pro that wasn’t much heavier than my current Air but which did have a GPU. The former is a pipe dream right now. The latter might happen any month now. Hopefully.
I used to use two screens on my desktop, and I might consider do so again. However, I’ve found that using one screen increases my ability to glance up and look outside my window. A second screen cuts that down quite a bit. As well, I’ve discovered that parking my laptop on one side lets me keep various websites or other reference material in easy view while I work on the desktop.
Finally, a closer-to-ideal setup would include a data solution for my media files that was a bit less maintenance intensive. I think the best I’ll be able to do in the near future is consolidate my various hard drive arrays into two Promise Thunderbolt R6 arrays when I upgrade my desktop machine. That jump will probably happen sometime in the next six months.

Thing is, you could also decide to read.
If you can forgive the pure egomasturbatoriness of me linking to this, it’s a great article about choosing to spend your free time reading.

october 2011
Vele lezers vroegen me:

Subsection (1) (a) (iv) of this section is not to be regarded as requiring the provision of information as to the logic involved in the taking of a decision if and to the extent only that such provision would adversely affect trade secrets or intellectual property (in particular any copyright protecting computer software).

Subsection (1) (a) (iv) of this section is not to be regarded as requiring the provision of information as to the logic involved in the taking of a decision if and to the extent only that such provision would adversely affect trade secrets or intellectual property (in particular any copyright protecting computer software).

Which VPN Providers Really Take Anonymity Seriously? | TorrentFreak
october 2011
Last month it became apparent that not all VPN providers live up to their marketing after an alleged member of Lulzsec was tracked down after using a supposedly anonymous service from HideMyAss. We wanted to know which VPN providers take privacy extremely seriously so we asked many of the leading providers two very straightforward questions. Their responses will be of interest to anyone concerned with anonymity issues.

Coming Soon - The Drone Arms Race - NYTimes.com
october 2011
AT the Zhuhai air show in southeastern China last November, Chinese companies startled some Americans by unveiling 25 different models of remotely controlled aircraft and showing video animation of a missile-armed drone taking out an armored vehicle and attacking a United States aircraft carrier.
The presentation appeared to be more marketing hype than military threat; the event is China’s biggest aviation market, drawing both Chinese and foreign military buyers. But it was stark evidence that the United States’ near monopoly on armed drones was coming to an end, with far-reaching consequences for American security, international law and the future of warfare.

How data and open government are transforming NYC
october 2011
"In God We Trust," tweeted New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg this month. "Everyone else, bring data."
Bloomberg, the billionaire founder of Bloomberg L.P., is now in his third term as mayor of the Big Apple. During his tenure, New York City has embraced a more data-driven approach to governing, even when the results of that data-driven transparency show a slump in city services.
This should be no surprise to anyone familiar with the mission statement of his financial data company:
Bloomberg started out with one core belief: that bringing transparency to capital markets through access to information could increase capital flows, produce economic growth and jobs, and significantly reduce the cost of doing business.
To reshape that mission statement for New York City, one might reasonably suggest that Bloomberg's data-driven approach to government is founded upon that belief that bringing transparency to government through access to information could increase capital flows, produce economic growth and jobs, and significantly reduce the cost of the business of government.
As Gov 2.0 goes local, New York City has become the epicenter for many experiments in governance, from citizensourcing smarter government to participatory budgeting to embracing a broader future as a data platform.
One of the most prominent New Yorkers supporting architecting a city as a platform is the city's first chief digital officer, Rachel Sterne.
Sterne gave a keynote speech at this year's Strata NY conference that explained how data-driven innovation informs New York's aim to be the nation's premier digital city.
"I'm especially excited to be speaking with you because as a city, we need your help," said Sterne to the assembled Strata attendees. "As the data practitioners and data scientists who are at the forefront of this revolution, all of our efforts are for naught if you are not part of them and not helping us to expand them and helping to really take advantage of all of the resources that the city of New York is trying put at your disposal."
Video of Sterne's talk is embedded below.
New York City's digital strategy is focused on access to technology, open government, engagement and industry. "Industry is important because we need to make sure the private sector has all the supports it needs to grow and thrive and help to create these solutions that will help the government to ultimately better serve the public," said Sterne. "Open government is important because if our data and our internal structure and priorities aren't completely open, we're not going to be able to enable increased [open] services, that kind of [open] exchange of information, etc. Engagement is crucial because we need to be constantly gathering feedback from the public, informing and serving. And access is the foundation because everyone needs access to these technologies."
Big data in the Big Apple
What does data-driven innovation look like in New York City? Sterne focused on how data "evolves government," asserting that it leads to a more efficient allocation of resources, a more effective execution, and a better response to the real-time needs of citizens. Although she allowed that, "as everyone knows, data can be manipulated."
Sterne highlighted several data-driven initiatives across the city, including the Metropolitan Transit Authority's Bus Time Initiative. "Initially, it was scoped out to hundreds of millions of dollars. The MTA ended up working with a local open-source development shop, [which] did it for a fraction of that, below a million dollars, and now you can get real-time updates on your phone based on where the buses are located using very low-cost technologies."
New York City is also using data internally, explained Sterne — like applying predictive analytics to building code violations and housing data to try to understand where potential fire risks might exist. If that sounds familiar to Radar readers, it should: Chicago is also looking to use data, developers and citizens to become a smarter city. "This is as much about citizens talking to the infrastructure of the city as infrastructure talking to itself," said Chicago CTO John Tolva in an interview last March. "It's where urban informatics and smarter cities cross over to Gov 2.0."
Web 2.0 Summit, being held October 17-19 in San Francisco, will examine "The Data Frame" — focusing on the impact of data in today's networked economy.

New York City, however, has a vastly greater "digital reach" than Chicago. It's bigger than many corporations and states, in fact, connecting to more than four million people through NYC.gov and social media channels that have expanded to include Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, YouTube and Foursquare. Sterne envisions the city's 200-plus social media platforms as a kind of "digital switchboard," where citizens ask questions and government workers direct them to the appropriate resources, much in the same way that California connects citizens to e-services with social media.
The web as the 21st century public square
"What we're really seeing that's interesting about all these things is that they're happening in public, so people are informing one another," said Sterne. "They're engaging one another, and it's not so much the city telling you what to do but creating a forum for that conversation to take place." If you visit NYC's custom bitly URL shortener, on.nyc.gov, you can see what content is popular within that community.
Back in May, when NYC's digital roadmap was released, Anil Dash highlighted something important: the roadmap captured New York City government thinking about the web as a public space. This has profound implications about how it should be regulated, treated or described. "The single biggest lesson I got from the
65-page, 11.8mb PDF is a simple one," Dash, a native New Yorker, blogger and entrepreneur, wrote. "The greatest city in the world can take shared public spaces online as seriously as it takes its public spaces in the physical world."
City as a platform
Sterne's description of a "city as a platform" is one of the purest articulations of Tim O'Reilly's "government as a platform" vision that I've heard any public servant articulate this year.
"The thing that's really exciting to me, better than internal data, of course, is open data," Sterne said during her Strata Conference talk. "This, I think, is where we really start to reach the potential of New York City becoming a platform like some of the bigger commercial platforms and open data platforms. How can New York City, with the enormous amount of data and resources we have, think of itself the same way Facebook has an API ecosystem or Twitter does? This can enable us to produce a more user-centric experience of government. It democratizes the exchange of information and services. If someone wants to do a better job than we are in communicating something, it's all out there. It empowers citizens to collaboratively create solutions. It's not just the consumption but the co-production of government services and democracy."
Sterne highlighted the most important open data initiative that the city has pursued to date, the NYC DataMine. Soon, she said, they will be introducing "NYC Platform," which she described as "the city's API." All of their work opening the data, however, "doesn't matter if we're not evangelizing it and making sure people are using it."
NYC has used an app competition to draw more attention to its open data. As I've written elsewhere, by tying specific citizen needs to development, NYC Bigs Apps 3.0 is part of the next-generation of government apps competitions that incorporate sustainability, community, and civic value.
"We've had about 150 apps developed," said Sterne. "There are apps that would be a significant cost to the city. Instead, they're at basically no cost because the prize money is all donated. We provide 350 datasets. Until now, they were not API-enabled. They were not dynamic, but we're going to be doing that because that's the overwhelming response that we're receiving from everyone."
That feedback is widespread in the open government data community, where studies show that developers prefer to explore and interact with data online, as opposed to downloading datasets. When it comes to developers working with public data, dynamic access can open up entire new horizons for potential applications, as the release of real-time transit data has demonstrated.
Sterne shared some useful examples of apps that have been created using NYC open government data, including Roadify, which allows you to find parking spots or transit information, and Don't Eat At, a Foursquare app that sends users a text message when they check into a NYC restaurant that is at risk of being closed for health code violations.
Sterne's message to data scientists was generally quite well received at Strata. "Pleased to see @RachelSterne's keynote today," tweeted Alistair Coote, a NYC Web developer at RecordSetter. "If done right, open govt will be far more important than anything announced at #f8 today," he observed, referring to Facebook's new look.
Why open government data matters to New Yorkers
The experience in NYC during Hurricane Irene "once again proved the utility and importance of open data and the NYC DataMine, as several organizations used OEM's Hurricane Evacuation Zone geographic data to build maps that served and informed the public," Sterne told me via email. "This data has been public for over a year. Parties developing tools built on city platforms included WNYC, NYTimes, Google, Mobile Commons and Crisis Commons. NYC Digital was also in regular contact with these parties to alert them of information changes."
The key insight coming out of that August weekend, with respect to the city acting as a platform during unprecedented demands for information, was that th[…]

Wie weet wat van mij? PIM helpt « Bits of Freedom
august 2011

5 companies using big data to help the planet — Cleantech News and Analysis
june 2011
In contrast to green technologies like solar power and biofuels, which take decades of research and massive funds to scale, big data tools offer a relatively capital-efficient way to use proven technology to better manage resources, fight climate change and get ready for the 9 billion people on the planet by 2050. If there’s no Moore’s Law delivering rapid and exponential progress for things like batteries, and solar panels, why not try to leverage Moore’s Law in a more indirect way for greentech via big data? Here are 5 companies that are leveraging big data to help the planet:

How Do I Learn How to Code? | Smarterware
june 2011
Sounds like Marco gets this question as much as I do; here's his reply. I wrote my response on Lifehacker in November 2009, and since then LH ran a whole "Night School" series about it. But as Marco said, the question isn't "How do I learn how to code?" The question is, "What do I want to make?" Once you've answered that question, figuring out languages and development tools is literally a matter of reading a beginner's book or watching video tutorials or taking a class. Then, you put in the work.

The economics of an ice cream cone
june 2011
At a Boston ice cream shop, the cost of ice cream cone has risen 10% in the last four months. The Boston Globe investigated down the supply chain and detailed where the price increases are coming from.
Ice cream may be a deliciously simple combination of milk, butter, and sugar, but the true cost of an ice cream cone is no simple business calculation. Toscanini's price tag is part of complex and increasingly interconnected world economy, one that links a dairy farm in the tiny Western Massachusetts town of Colrain to the sprawling neighborhoods of Beijing.
Also of note: pistachio ice cream might be difficult to find this summer because the cost of pistachios has increased sharply in recent months. (via girlhacker)

Mediamatic.net - Infographics: Are the budget cuts necessary or just plain stupid?
june 2011
The Dutch budget for arts & culture is relatively small. The above average cuts will produce below average results.
In 2011 the budget is € 490 million. That sounds like a lot, but it is only a third of what we spend on holidays. It's 1,5% of the annual costs of the State Pension, and only 0,2% of the country's total Budget.
Feel free to use these infographics. Spread the word!

F.lux: software to make your life better
june 2011
During the day, computer screens look good—they're designed to look like the sun. But, at 9PM, 10PM, or 3AM, you probably shouldn't be looking at the sun.
F.lux fixes this: it makes the color of your computer's display adapt to the time of day, warm at night and like sunlight during the day.
It's even possible that you're staying up too late because of your computer. You could use f.lux because it makes you sleep better, or you could just use it just because it makes your computer look better.

1X - The Edge by Marsel van Oosten
may 2011
"When I was at Victoria Falls last year, I thought about the billions of photographs that must have been taken there, and I almost decided to just visit the place without my camera. That was until I spoke with some of the local people, who told me that they had seen a bull elephant crossing the Zambezi river the day before. During my research I had not seen any images of the falls with an elephant in it, so I decided to stay a few extra days and try my luck."

TipToe - Search, view, share the web
april 2011
Instead of using the built-in Google search of Safari, you can just search the web from Tip Toe, with a few advantages: the engine is based on Bing and Blekko, with a bit of artificial intelligence on top. It should remove all aggregated results of server farms, and the interface is free of ads. One more point: Tip Toe does NOT track your searches, and respects your privacy.

Lockhart's Lament
april 2011
This month's column is devoted to an article called A Mathematician's Lament, written by Paul Lockhart in 2002. Paul is a mathematics teacher at Saint Ann's School in Brooklyn, New York. His article has been circulating through parts of the mathematics and math ed communities ever since, but he never published it. I came across it by accident a few months ago, and decided at once I wanted to give it wider exposure. I contacted Paul, and he agreed to have me publish his "lament" on MAA Online. It is, quite frankly, one of the best critiques of current K-12 mathematics education I have ever seen. Written by a first-class research mathematician who elected to devote his teaching career to K-!2 education.

Nederlands Architectuurinstituut - 3D Architectuurapplicatie
march 2011

Databases. Over ICT-beloftes, informatiehonger en digitale autonomie.: Rathenau Instituut
february 2011

ART=WORK · The Form of the Book, Digested
february 2011
The Form of the Book, by Jan Tschichold, is the authority on book design and the best book I have ever read on typography (and I’ve read many, mind you). As a web designer this book taught me how to set readable, easy-to-digest blocks of type. As the lead designer on Unit Interactive’s recently launched Curations series, I found new relevance in these pages. The principles of setting type to be read and laying out a harmonious page transcend medium and materials. A solid understanding of the fundamentals detailed in this book will make any designer better. Instantly.
