'A Fish In Your Ear': What Gets Lost In Translation : NPR
4 weeks ago by Michael.Massing
"When you use [Google Translate] to take a letter from a Swedish girlfriend and check that you have understood what she meant, that's fine, if your Swedish is a bit ropey. ... Google Translate has many perfectly sensible and viable uses, and it's a most impressive intellectual and technical achievement. But ... Google itself wouldn't think of using Google Translate to produce its publicity literature in the languages in which it sells its services. It uses human translators to do that....
"Every human language can fulfill all the needs that its users want to make of it. And if it really needs a word to articulate the wrist and distinguish the hand from the arm, well, they'll jolly well invent one so as to do so. And if they haven't invented one, it's because actually their [are] sort of other ways around it, because life is a very flexible thing.
"I'm personally very skeptical of the idea that any language, any of the languages that human communities have, constrains them to talk about the world in any particular way. It may make it easier to talk about the world in some particular ways, but if you really need to make a distinction, well, you invent a word. You do something new. Language is forever changing in response to [its] users' need."

10 reasons why play is important | National Literacy Trust
august 2011 by Michael.Massing
1. Play lays the foundation for literacy. Through play children learn to make and practise new sounds. They try out new vocabulary...and exercise their imagination through storytelling.
3. Play encourages adults to communicate with [children]. Adults support play by giving children the opportunity to [play, and by knowing when and whether] to intervene.
7. Play gives adults the chance to learn how to play again. One of the most challenging parts of play is incorporating yourself in it.
8. Play allows adults to learn their child’s body language. Knowing when you should incorporate yourself in your child’s play is key.
9. Play teaches adults patience and understanding. If you do choose to join in your child’s play make sure that you do not try to take it over and force incorporation of your ultimate learning objectives into their play. Structured adult-led activities have their time and place but remember to allow for time for children to control and decide their own play.

Congresswoman Reveals Having Had Abortion « Alan Colmes' Liberaland
february 2011 by Michael.Massing
California Democratic Congresswoman Jackie Speier took aim at Republican Chris Smith of New Jersey for making defunding of Planned Parenthood a priority while minimizing the difficulty women and their families have when deciding whether or not to have abortions. This goes to the heart of conservative arguments against abortion, that women view abortion as birth control and don’t struggle with what can be torturous decisions that are often made because of health issues.
“I really planned to speak about something else. But the gentleman from New Jersey just put my stomach in knots. Because I’m one of those women he spoke about just now. I had a procedure at 17 weeks pregnant with a child who moved from the vagina into the cervix. And that procedure that you just described is a procedure that I endured. I lost the baby. And for you to stand on this floor and suggest that somehow this is a procedure that is either welcomed or done cavalierly or done without any thought, is preposterous.”

Clef Notes and Drama Queens: On the death of Milton Babbitt at 94 - Classical music and theater in Baltimore: Critic Tim Smith writes about classical music, opera, theater, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Centerstage, and more - baltimoresun.com
january 2011 by Michael.Massing
Babbitt called his language "advanced music" and argued that it was like advanced mathematics—harder [to digest, but not] unworthy of an attempt to understand it.
Babbitt's singular contribution to the 12-tone method launched by Arnold Schoenberg was to expand its application to other aspects of music besides pitch, so that everything in a composition, right down to matters of loudness and softness, would be determined serially. It takes considerable effort to comprehend the way such music is constructed, but it really isn't that difficult to zero in on the frequency, so to speak, and start to experience the music on various levels.
I love the good old tonal stuff as much as the next guy, but I'm grateful to live at a time when so many forms of musical expression are possibile—and so often wonderfully rewarding. The music would is a better, more interesting place because of Milton Babbitt and those who were inspired by him to explore the farthest reaches of the atonal realm.

Jeanne Baret, The First Woman To Circumnavigate The Globe : NPR
december 2010 by Michael.Massing
"The couple formulated a plan for Baret to disguise herself as a young man [and] offer herself as his assistant on the dockside."
After Commerson "accepted" Baret into his service, the couple was able to keep their secret from the crew of over 100 men for some time. Baret's real identity was cruelly revealed, however. The commander of the expedition claims it happened when the Etoile landed on the island of Tahiti.
"Bougainville said that a group of Tahitian men surrounded Baret and immediately identified her as a woman...[S]he supposedly revealed her true identity so that her countrymen, the French, could save her from what she took to be an imminent sexual assault."
But after poring over the diaries of crew members, Ridley doesn't believe Bougainville's tale[: "T]hree other members of the crew contradict this story and say that Baret was, in fact, brutally exposed." According to the other journals, Baret was discovered and gang-raped by her crewmates in Papua New Guinea.

Is This Your Brain On God? : NPR
december 2010 by Michael.Massing
More than half of adult Americans report they have had a spiritual experience that changed their lives. Now, scientists from universities like Harvard, Pennsylvania and Johns Hopkins are using new technologies to analyze the brains of people who claim they have touched the spiritual — from Christians who speak in tongues to Buddhist monks to people who claim to have had near-death experiences. Hear what they have discovered in this controversial field, as the science of spirituality continues to evolve.

The Housing Crash Recession . NOW on PBS
november 2010 by Michael.Massing
The irrational exuberance of a housing bubble [made homebuyers] eager to take on mortgages that they could not possibly afford and banks and investors...willing to make loans that couldn't be paid back. If house prices always rise, then homebuyers can [meet their payments by borrowing against expanding equity, or] simply sell the home and pocket the profits.
[For lenders, if] house prices are rising rapidly, then it doesn't matter if borrowers can't meet mortgage payments[—a foreclosed home will likely cover most or all of a mortgage's value. The bubble mentality] created the environment in which bad lending practices could thrive...
Greenspan not only deserves blame for fostering the housing bubble, he was also seriously negligent in his regulatory responsibilities at the Fed. The abusive mortgage practices that are now being reported so prominently were widely known years earlier. When millions of bad loans are being issued all over the country, it is not being done in secret.
