Animas Corp [Johnson & Johnson] Receives Warning Letter from the FDA
Federal regulators have warned Johnson & Johnson that it could face fines and other sanctions for selling faulty insulin pumps and delaying disclosures of serious injuries to diabetics who were using its OneTouch Ping and 2020 pumps. The FDA ordered the Animas Corp. unit of J&J to explain why it kept selling pumps known to fail and also to submit a plan to rectify a failure to promptly report cases in which its device might have caused or contributed to death or serious injury....
In the issue with the Animas insulin pumps, some pump keypads for controlling how much insulin is injected were deteriorating prematurely, leading to failures. "We decided to go with a new keypad because it's more durable," [spokesperson Caoline] Pavis said.
But while Animas was lining up the new keypad supplier, it was still selling the older ones. The FDA demanded documents about the company's decision to do that.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Fact Sheet: National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS)
Women are 3 times more likely than men to develop carpal tunnel syndrome...The dominant hand is usually affected first and produces the most severe pain. [Metabolic disorders that affect the body's nerves and make them more susceptible to compression increase risk]....
[Carpal tunnel syndrome is most prevalent in workers on assembly lines—manufacturing, sewing, finishing, cleaning, and meat, poultry, or fish packing. C]arpal tunnel syndrome is three times more common among assemblers than among data-entry personnel. A 2001 study by the Mayo Clinic found heavy computer use (up to 7 hours a day) did not increase a person's risk of developing carpal tunnel syndrome.
During 1998, an estimated three of every 10,000 workers lost time from work because of carpal tunnel syndrome. Half of these workers missed more than 10 days of work. The average lifetime cost of carpal tunnel syndrome, including medical bills and lost time from work, is estimated to be about $30,000 for each injured worker.

Tracking investigators' findings about on-the-job fatalities : The Pump Handle
Since July 2009, OSHA [posts a weekly summary] of worker fatalities and incidents in which three or more workers are hospitalized....OSHA needs to link these initial reports with its investigation results. If citations and penalties are proposed, they should be noted or [linked. Without this follow-up information, the] public is left in the dark...
Responding to fatalities is one of OSHA's highest inspection priorities and its field staff devote substantial resources to responding to them. Only the harshest opponents of government programs would reject spending taxpayer dollars on worker fatality investigations. Determining for a family, for co-workers and a community whether safety rules were broken and led to a worker's death serves the common good in a civil society....
[Each weekly report heading promises updates with inspection results and citation information. These] have yet to materialize.

Bicycles: The chains that set women free - Telegraph
Bicycles drew attention to the long-term consequences of binding the body in a corset. The hourglass figure demanded of the respectable woman came at a price: the fainting and vapours associated with whey-faced Victorian damsels were often symptoms of chlorosis, a syndrome connected with disruption in blood flow, which [could in turn prolapse the uterus: push the womb outwards and downwards by the force of tight lacing... The rib cage could be] so severely constricted that the ribs began to press inwards on the lungs.
The Rational Dress Society, founded in 1881, tried to deal with both the cycling problem and the corsetry issue at once. ''What,’’ asked the society’s president Lady Harberton rhetorically, ''can be the true state of intelligence of a creature which deliberately loads itself with quantities of useless material round its legs… and then, in order to correct the ugliness of such a dress, squeezes in its body until the vital functions can only be carried on imperfectly?’’

Tricare Investigation: Pentagon Plan Won't Cover Brain-Damage Therapy : NPR
[People who suffer brain injuries seem to benefit from "cognitive rehabilitation therapy",] in which patients relearn basic life tasks such as counting, cooking or remembering directions...[Neurologists, several] insurance companies and even some medical facilities run by the Pentagon [endorse] the therapy...[D]espite pressure from Congress and the recommendations of military and civilian experts, the Pentagon’s health plan for troops and many veterans refuses to cover the treatment—[potentially affecting] tens of thousands of service members....
Tricare [covers] nearly 4 million active-duty military and retirees...
• [Its] analysis of cognitive rehabilitation discounted studies showing [patient benefit.]
• [S]cientific reviews denounced the analysis as a "misuse" of science.
• [T]roops without aggressive advocates or high-level connections have been denied care or never sought treatment.
• Some civilian brain clinics [are reluctant to treat troops and veterans for fear of no] payment.
