Mach's Principle: From Newton's Bucket to Quantum Gravity
When was the last time a conference proceedings volume made good bedtime reading? Mach's Principle: From Newton's Bucket to Quantum Gravity, is such a book. Editors Julian Barbour and Herbert Pfister have crafted a nutritious stew from the strangest variety of ingredients: well-written papers not only by physicists but by historians and philosophers of science, brief quotes from famous physicists of the past and full translations of more obscure papers from 100 years ago, extensively transcribed and beautifully edited discussions of the papers, an index of 21 different formulations of Mach's principle, and the results of several `straw polls' of the participants at the July 1993 Tubingen conference on which this volume is based. Readers will be tempted again and again to dip into the riches provided here. The bedside table, or the coffee table, is indeed the best home for this book.

DUNAJAM is not a festival. Imagin a birthday party, that's how it works. Or something like a mix between a picnic and a pilgrimage, if you want to be invited send an e-mail to dunajam [AT] gmail.com The waiting list is quite long since this can't be done with more than 150 people so that's the limit, therefore be prepared to wait quite a bit before you will get an answer.

Welcome to datapacker · jgoerzen/datapacker Wiki · GitHub
datapacker is a tool to group files by size. It is perhaps most often used to fit a set of files onto the minimum number of CDs or DVDs.

datapacker is designed to group files such that they fill fixed-size containers (called “bins”) using the minimum number of containers. This is useful, for instance, if you want to archive a number of files to CD or DVD, and want to organize them such that you use the minimum possible number of CDs or DVDs.

[1105.3402] Mystery of the Cosmological Constant
The 2011 Nobel prize in physics has been awarded to S. Perlmutter, A. Riess and B. Schmidt for their path breaking discovery that the rate of expansion of the universe is increasing with time. The trio used Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) as standard candles to estimate their luminosity-distances. To appreciate some of the far reaching implications of their work, I have provided an elementary exposition of general theory of relativity, accelerated expansion of the universe, luminosity-distance, SNe Ia and the cosmological constant problem.

The argparse module was added to Python 2.7 as a replacement for optparse. The implementation of argparse supports features that would not have been easy to add to optparse, and that would have required backwards-incompatible API changes, so a new module was brought into the library instead. optparse is still supported, but is not likely to receive new features.

emacs-nav - Emacs mode for filesystem navigation - Google Project Hosting
Nav is a lightweight solution for Emacs users who want something like TextMate's file browser, or the Eclipse project view. Unlike these two, Nav only shows the contents of a single directory at a time. Nav can be run painlessly in terminals, where Speedbar either fails on its attempt to make a new frame or is hidden. Nav's terminal-friendliness comes from running in the frame where it was started, keeping window management simple. The Nav key bindings are also simple -- each key command is a single keystroke long.

Atlas3D Survey
The ATLAS3D Project (Cappellari et al. 2011) combines a multi-wavelength survey of a complete sample of 260 early-type galaxies within the local (42Mpc) volume (1.16×105 Mpc3) with numerical simulations and semi-analytic modeling of galaxy formation. This project aims to quantify the global stellar kinematics and dynamics of a statistically significant sample of objects to characterize the class of early-type galaxies, and relate this to their formation and evolution. Combining the stellar populations diagnostics from the multi-wavelength coverage, the ATLAS3D Project will derive the star formation history probing the mass-assembly epochs and timescales. In addition, the project will characterise the different phases of the interstellar medium linking the kinematics of molecular, atomic and ionised gas with the dynamical structure, star formation and environment of the host galaxies.

Shape is a morpho-kinematic modeling and reconstruction tool for astrophysical objects. With this software you can quickly construct 3D model structures and directly compare them with data in order to assist in the interpretation of observations. From such a 3D structure model with a model velocity field and emission properties, it generates images and position-velocity (pv) diagrams, channel maps, light echoes, light curves and one dimensional spectral line shape, to mention a few. Wavelength dependent radiation transfer for line emission and scattering on dust is also possible.

AAVSO International Variable Star Index VSX (Watson+, 2006-2012)
This file contains Galactic stars known or suspected to be variable.
It lists all stars that have an entry in the AAVSO International
Variable Star Index (VSX; http://www.aavso.org/vsx).

The database consisted initially of the General Catalogue of Variable
Stars (GCVS) and the New Catalogue of Suspected Variables (NSV) and
was then supplemented with a large number of variable star catalogues,
as well as individual variable star discoveries or variables found in
the literature. Effort has also been invested to update the entries
with the latest information regarding position, type and period and to
remove duplicates. The VSX database is being continually updated and
maintained.

For historical reasons some objects outside of the Galaxy have been
included.

(Giselher Schubert)

Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) for alcoholism: meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
Assessments of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) in the treatment of alcoholism have not been based on quantitative meta-analysis. Hence, we performed a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials in order to evaluate the clinical efficacy of LSD in the treatment of alcoholism. Two reviewers independently extracted the data, pooling the effects using odds ratios (ORs) by a generic inverse variance, random effects model. We identified six eligible trials, including 536 participants. There was evidence for a beneficial effect of LSD on alcohol misuse (OR, 1.96; 95% CI, 1.36–2.84; p = 0.0003). Between-trial heterogeneity for the treatment effects was negligible (I² = 0%). Secondary outcomes, risk of bias and limitations are discussed. A single dose of LSD, in the context of various alcoholism treatment programs, is associated with a decrease in alcohol misuse.
