De NARCIS Classificatie is een schema van codes waarmee experts en onderzoeksorganisaties kunnen worden ingedeeld en teruggevonden. De classificatie bestaat uit 2 hoofdrubrieken. De A-code geeft een overzicht van aandachtsgebieden en de D-code rubriceert de wetenschappelijke disciplines. Daarnaast bevat de classificatie een C-code. Deze code omvat een zestal interdisciplinaire onderzoeksgebieden. De NARCIS Classificatie is in 2009 herzien.
De NARCIS Classificatie wordt onder meer gebruikt in de wetenschapsportal NARCIS, www.narcis.nl.

All the tools I’ve come across, whatever the actual algorithm(s) they use to classify, need to be trained in order to function effectively, i.e., you provide the tool some examples of each kind of document you want it to classify so it can learn what makes each kind of document what it is and different from other kinds of documents.

To be faced with a document collection and not to be able to find the information you know exists somewhere within it is a problem as old as the existence of document collections. Information Architecture is the discipline dealing with the modern version of this problem: how to organize web sites so that users actually can find what they are looking for.

Information architects have so far applied known and well-tried tools from library science to solve this problem, and now topic maps are sailing up as another potential tool for information architects. This raises the question of how topic maps compare with the traditional solutions, and that is the question this paper attempts to address.

The paper argues that topic maps go beyond the traditional solutions in the sense that it provides a framework within which they can be represented as they are, but also extended in ways which significantly improve information retrieval.

Door de explosieve groei van van informatie en de komst van internet is het zoeken naar informatie er niet eenvoudiger op geworden. Handmatig toekennen van metadata is te arbeidsintensief, maar zonder metadatering worden documenten slecht terugvonden. Automatisch classificeren lijkt uitkomst te bieden. In dit artikel geef ik vanuit bibliotheekperpectief een uiteenzetting over automatische classificatie. Hierbij besteed ik aandacht aan de verschillende methoden van classificeren en aan de rol die ‘traditionele’ ontsluitingstechnieken (zoals taxonomieën en thesauri) kunnen spelen.
