The Tsavo Lions
12 weeks ago by Anne
In March 1898 the British started building a railway bridge over the Tsavo (SAH-vo) River in East Africa. Over the next nine months, two large male lions reportedly killed and ate many railway workers and native Africans. Chief engineer Lt. Col. John Henry Patterson finally shot the first lion on December 9, 1898, and three weeks later brought down the second. The bridge was completed in February 1899.

Hachikō
september 2011 by Anne
In 1924, Hachiko was brought to Tokyo by its master Hidesamuro Ueno, a professor in the agricultural department at the University of Tokyo. When his master returned from work each day, Hachiko would make his way to nearby Shibuya (railway) Station and be there to meet him. For just about a year, this was Hachiko's faithful habit. His master passed away in May 1925, but Hachiko continued to return each day at the same time to wait for his master at the station, and did so for the next 11 years until his own death in 1935. Tourists can visit the extraordinary statue of Hachiko at Shibuya Station.
