How To Use Impress.Js | Cube Websites Blog
yesterday
Yesterday, I wrote about Impress.js, an awesome JavaScript library for creating online presentations. Since posting online, I’ve had several people ask how exactly to use it, as there’s no set documentation on the actual project page. This guide will help you get started and allow you to create a simple slideshow, but after completing it please bear in mind that there’s so much more that can be done with it. The only limit is your creativity!

Using Impress.js « Tony Thomas
yesterday
I came across Impress.js a while back and I was, well, impressed. It makes sense to do presentations on the web, given the powerful animations and transitions available in modern browsers. Impress is sort of like Prezi improved. Improved because it takes advantage of 3d animation. It does require some technical skill however. You need to know a bit about HTML5 and you have to be able to code a web page and write styles.
Right now you can only learn how to use Impress.js by reading the comments and experimenting. I thought it might be good to go through each of the features here to give a sense of it’s capabilities. If you’re interested, there aren’t really any insights here that you can’t find in the source.
The first thing is that you have to have a story to tell. Impress.js does nothing for you if you don’t have a narrative. So plan out what you want to say. Personally, write out what I want to say in any presentation in prose first. Just words. That way I can get a cohesive narrative going with good verbal transitions. Then I think about the visual stuff.
Assuming you know what you want to say, let’s move on.

JavaScript Garden is a growing collection of documentation about the most quirky parts of the JavaScript programming language. It gives advice to avoid common mistakes and subtle bugs, as well as performance issues and bad practices, that non-expert JavaScript programmers may encounter on their endeavours into the depths of the language.
JavaScript Garden does not aim to teach you JavaScript. Former knowledge of the language is strongly recommended in order to understand the topics covered in this guide. In order to learn the basics of the language, please head over to the excellent guide on the Mozilla Developer Network.

Responsive viewport units - destroy/dstorey
yesterday
With all this new fangled talk of responsive web design, its about time that we had a poster child CSS unit to go with it. So move over em, CSS3 Values and Units introduces a bunch of new viewport units that are getting ready for their time in the limelight.
Motorola recently implemented support for these viewport length units and they’ve now found their way into Chrome Canary, so we can now start to experiment with them. They are also supported in IE9, although the vm unit has been updated to vmin since then.
Introducing vh, vw, and vmin
The vh unit stands for viewport height, vw for Volkswagen viewport width, and vmin represents whichever of vh or vw is the shortest length.
The values used can be somewhat confusing if you’ve not used these units before, as 1vh represents 1% of the current viewport (the content area of the browser window) height, rather than 100% as you may expect. Therefore if you want an element to be the full height of your viewport you should set it to 100vh. As you would expect, vw works exactly the same way as vh units.
If you have a widescreen monitor and your browser window is set to full screen, the width would be wider than the height. In this case the vmin unit would be the same as the vh unit.
The viewport units are dynamic rather than static, so if you resize the browser window, the computed value of the units will also change. If for example your browser window is 1000px wide, and element with a width of 10vw would be 100px wide. If you shrink the browser window to only 100px wide, the width of the element would resize with it to 10px wide.

Which responsive images solution should you use? | CSS-Tricks
yesterday
There are a bunch of techniques going around for dealing with responsive images lately. That is, solutions to help us serve the right image for the occasion (e.g. size of screen and bandwidth available). They all do things a bit differently. To keep track, Christopher Schmitt and I have created this spreadsheet of techniques.
The spreadsheet has the data, but let's digest it through thinking about it through the lens of practical questions.
To choose which technique is right for you and your project these questions may help as a guide. Many of the questions may apply to your project, so you'll have to sort out which techniques fit what scenarios and find the overlap.

Fortress of War (2010) - IMDb
The film shows the heroic defense of the Brest Fortress, which had taken upon the first strike of German fascist invaders on June 22 1941. Story describes the events of the first days of the defense. The film tells about three main resistance zones, headed by the regiment commander, Pyotr Mikhailovich Gavrilov, the commissar Efim Moiseevich Fomin and the head of the 9th frontier outpost, Andrey Mitrofanovich Kizhevatov. Many years later veteran Alexander Akimov again and again recalls the memories of the time, when he, then a 15 year old Sasha Akimov was deeply in love with the beautiful Anya and suddenly found himself in the middle of the bloody events of war.

Why Nikola Tesla was the greatest geek who ever lived - The Oatmeal
11 days ago
If you want to learn more about Tesla, I highly recommend reading Tesla: Man Out of Time
Also, this Badass of the week by Ben Thompson is what originally inspired me to write a comic about Tesla. Ben's also got a book out which is packed full of awesome.
There's an old movie from the 80s on Netflix Instant Queue right now about Tesla: The Secret of Nikola Tesla. It's corny and full of bad acting, but it paints a fairly accurate depiction of his life.
X-rays: just to clarify, Tesla did not discover x-rays, but he was one of the early pioneers in its research.
Cryogenic engineering: I'm referring to the cryogenic engineering that has to do with using liquified air to cool a coil and reduce its electrical resistance (Patent No. 11,865), not freezing people and waking them up in the future so they can fight Wesley Snipes.
Transistor: Tesla's influence on the modern transistor can be found in patents 723,188 and 725,605. (a better explanation here)
Radio: Tesla was the nicest geek ever until he decided to sue Marconi a few years later. 8 months after Tesla died, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Marconi's patents on the invention of radio. So Tesla eventually won that battle, although he was dead by then.
Tesla VS Edison: I could write a novel on the differences between Tesla and Edison, but seeing as how this comic is already huge I decided to leave many things out. For instance, Edison killed cats and dogs, but Tesla loved animals and had a cat as a child. Originally Tesla wanted to be a poet, but after getting zapped by static electricity from his kitty he was inspired to study the effects of electricity. One could vaguely construe that Tesla's cat was responsible for the second industrial revolution, which arguably makes it the most awesome cat who ever lived.
Edison believed that fossil fuels were the future and that there were enough resources in South America to provide for the next 50,000 years. Tesla believed that renewable energy sources like hydroelectric, solar, and wind power were the future. This is remarkable because in the 1890s there was no such thing as "going green," so Tesla's ideas on conservation were very forward-thinking at the time.
Lastly, a big thank you to Jane C. Daugherty for proofreading this article for me. If you want to learn things from the most awesome librarian this side of the North American tectonic plate, follow her on Twitter.

Modafinil: where to buy online cheap Modafinil medicine. Online pharmacies for order quality Modafinil UK & US & EU shipping. Who sell Sleep Aids drugs? European private pharmacy. European private pharmacy. The Europe is our HOME.

What is Modafinil?
The active ingredient of Modafinil may be sold under several names like Alertec, Carim, Modafinil, Modafinilo, Modalert, Modavigil, Modiodal, Provigil, Vigil.
Why?
Due to licensing agreements in different countries of the world, sometimes drug manufacturers market the same drug under different names in different countries. These are different trade names for the same medication.
Another reason of different name is selling of generic equivalent that for 50 percent to 80 percent less than the cost of the brand name. Exactly due this fact you may find Modafinil under different names in different pharmacies.

Modafinil and startups - swombat.com on startups
15 days ago
As I mentioned before, when I was starting my first company, while still working for Accenture, I held a somewhat insane schedule for about 9 months. Every day, I would sleep at 11pm sharp. I would then wake up at 4am, work until 7am, then nap for an hour before going to work at my day job. I then also worked the weekends (though with more sleep on Friday and Saturday night).
What I haven't mentioned on any of my blogs yet is that to enable me to do this, I used a (legal) drug called Modafinil, also known as Alertec or Provigil. In the startup world, where everyone is driven to get more things done than fit in the day's waking hours, the topic of using so-called "cognitive enhancers" surfaces every once in a while. I've mentioned most of the things in this article in Hacker News comments throughout the years, but I felt it made sense to put the whole "report" in one place, here.

iPad productivity apps - Matt Gemmell
I’m very invested in the iPad as a laptop replacement, and I endeavour to make it my main machine when I’m away from my desk (at which I currently use an iMac). I travel regularly, often to speak at events, and I try to embrace simplicity and to work away from my office as much as I can.
To that end, I’ve compiled a list of my essential iPad applications for productivity, that I use regularly when:
Planning and thinking about projects (in my case, often software).
Writing (for this blog, for Tap! magazine, and others).
Creating documentation and reports (for clients, based on my User Experience and Accessibility consulting services).
Creating and refining presentations for my speaking engagements.
Since I have my iPhone with me at all times, I try to keep only essential “big screen” apps on my iPad. For example, I keep my various apps for package-tracking, flight information, reminders etc strictly on the phone.

The project was called ‘How to evaluate success online?’ and took place from June 2010 to September 2011.
The final report, called ‘Let’s Get Real’, details the methodology, research and key findings. It was published in September 2011 at our conference of the same name in Bristol.
The publication of this report couldn’t be more timely, with cuts across all areas of our cultural life and affecting almost every museum, gallery, arts organisation, library, local authority and government department.
Our hope is that the publication will kick-start a dramatic shift in the way we all plan, invest and collaborate on the development of both the current and next generations of digital cultural activities.

Tazilon's Complete VK-2801 Cougar Scout Guide With Maps v7.2.01 - World of Tanks official forum

Here is my guide for the VK-2801. It is updated for 7.2
I have 5000+ missions in my Cougar and maintain an efficiency rating in the VK-2801 well above the Unicums level. Hopefully, some of what I've learned along the way can help you if you are new to the tank or wondering if you should try it.
The Guide covers all aspects of the VK-2801 and Scouting, in general. It includes a complete set of maps and has Replays demonstrating the techniques discussed.
If you spot any errors and/or have any input you would like to make or see included in future updates, please feel free to let me know.
The guide is rather big so I have saved it in PDF format.

since there is always much talk about getting better quality maps I thought I'd give it a go for the common good. I had to modify my game in no trivial manner to establish the long distance zoom and farplane view on the maps (you cannot use this for cheating, so forget about that if you were thinking in this direction; does not make sense anyway since you won't see your friggin' tank). I put together a GenericModEnabler mod with the modified files needed to set it up (for current v.6.7).

ImageOptim — all image compression tools in one Mac app
9 weeks ago
ImageOptim optimizes images — so they take up less disk space and load faster — by finding best compression parameters and by removing unnecessary comments and color profiles. It handles PNG, JPEG and GIF animations.
ImageOptim seamlessly integrates various optimisation tools: PNGOUT, AdvPNG, Pngcrush, extended OptiPNG, JpegOptim, jpegrescan, jpegtran, and Gifsicle.
It's excellent for publishing images on the web (easily shrinks images “Saved for Web” in Photoshop) and also useful for making Mac and iPhone/iPad applications smaller (see Xcode warning).

Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and its purpose in the service of your people. Prepare a noble death song for the day when you go over the great divide. Always give a word or a sign of salute when meeting or passing a friend, even a stranger, when in a lonely place. Show respect to all people and grovel to none. When you arise in the morning give thanks for the food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies only in yourself. Abuse no one and no thing, for abuse turns the wise ones to fools and robs the spirit of its vision. When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.

How to Disable iPad Home Button (Kiosk/Store Demo Mode) | Zachary Christopoulos
12 weeks ago
A client that I have asked if it was possible to disable the home button for an app that I am currently developing and I decided to tackle the challenge. All it really requires is a correctly configured mobile configuration plist. Now, a lot of people are probably quickly opening the iPhone Configuration Utility to try and figure out how to do this, but for some reason Apple didn’t put the keys required to disable the home button inside IPCU at all! IPCU can’t even install it on the device because of it.
I have included an example plist that will disable the home button and lock your device into the app. If you would like to just test this mobile config without making your own, feel free to use one I have created and uploaded by clicking here.

Steve Keen on the New Great Depression
december 2011
Economist Steve Keen, interviewed on the BBC’s HardTalk, November 24, 2011 (Transcription and editing by M. Jane Ross)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGkmgnprrIU
Sarah Montague of the BBC’s HardTalk (HT): Another Great Depression is all but inevitable. That’s the view of my guest today. No wonder he’s been called the merchant of gloom. But then Steve Keen is one of the few economists to have predicted the global financial crisis. And while he used to be a lone voice challenging the economic consensus, more and more people are now listening to him. His way of avoiding Depression: bankrupt the banks, nationalize the financial system and start all over again.

december 2011
Downloadr is a photo downloader for Microsoft Windows. It provides a simple interface to download large sized images from Flickr to your computer. You do not need a Flickr account to use Downloadr, though you do have even more functionality (like the ability to do a complete backup of all your photos) if you register at flickr.com. For a comprehensive overview of what Downloadr is able to do please watch the Screencast.
Here is a short list of what Downloadr can currently do for you. This is not a complete list of all features, only the major ones are listed here. New features are added from time to time and you will automatically be able to use them thanks to Downloadr's update function. Please be aware that Downloadr is still beta software: Use it, but do not rely on it. It may harm your PC or your flickr account, even though it has been tested many times.

HTML5 Rocks - HTML5 Video
november 2011
The video tag is one of those HTML5 features that gets a lot of attention. Often presented as an alternative to flash in the media, the video tag actually goes beyond that. Although it's recently joined the rest of the ubiquitous HTML tags, its capabilities and support across browsers have increased at an amazing speed. As you will see in this tutorial its main advantage is the natural integration with the other layers of the web development stack such as CSS and JavaScript as well as the other HTML tags.
This tutorial will give you a basic understanding of the video tag and also show various examples of different integrations with other HTML5 features, such as <canvas>.

Old School Color Cycling with HTML5 | EffectGames.com
november 2011
Anyone remember Color cycling from the 90s? This was a technology often used in 8-bit video games of the era, to achieve interesting visual effects by cycling (shifting) the color palette. Back then video cards could only render 256 colors at a time, so a palette of selected colors was used. But the programmer could change this palette at will, and all the onscreen colors would instantly change to match. It was fast, and took virtually no memory. Thus began the era of color cycling.
Most games used the technique to animate water, fire or other environmental effects. Unfortunately, more often than not this looked terrible, because the artist simply drew the scene once, picked some colors to be animated and set them to cycle. While this technically qualified as "color cycling", it looked more like a bad acid trip. For an example, just look at the water in this game.
However, there was one graphic artist who took the technique to a whole new level, and produced absolutely breathtaking color cycling scenes. Mark J. Ferrari, who also illustrated all the original backgrounds for LucasArts Loom, and some for The Secret of Monkey Island, invented his own unique ways of using color cycling for envrironmental effects that you really have to see to believe. These include rain, snow, ocean waves, moving fog, clouds, smoke, waterfalls, streams, lakes, and more. And all these effects are achieved without any layers or alpha channels -- just one single flat image with one 256 color palette.
Unfortunately the art of color cycling died out in the late 90s, giving way to newer technologies like 3D rendering and full 32-bit "true color" games. However, 2D pixel graphics of old are making a comeback in recent years, with mobile devices and web games. I thought now would be the time to reintroduce color cycling, using open web technologies like the HTML5 Canvas element.
This demo is an implementation of a full 8-bit color cycling engine, rendered into an HTML5 Canvas in real-time. I am using 35 of Mark's original 640x480 pixel masterpieces which you can explore, and I added some ambient environmental soundtracks to match. Please enjoy, and the source code is free for you to use in your own projects (download links at the bottom of the article).

Quick way to fix accidentally deleted .svn directories - Zach Waugh
november 2011
If you acccidentally delete a .svn directory from a folder that is under version control, you’ll get an error when you try to commit and won’t be able to proceed. A real quick fix, that worked for me, is to just check out a new copy of the repository, and copy the .svn directory you deleted to your current working copy and you should be able to commit.
$ svn co svn://server/project project $ mv project/path/to/dir/.svn working_copy/path/to/dir $ chmod -R 777 working_copy/path/to/dir
You may not need the chmod 777, but I was getting a permission denied error before that. I don’t know what negative effects this could have on your repository, so proceed at your own risk.

Building a Custom HTML5 Audio Player with jQuery « Neutron Creations
november 2011
We recently built an HTML5 audio player for Tim Van Damme‘s The Box, a new podcast where he interviews people who make cool stuff. Tim wanted an HTML5 audio player on the site, and we put together some jQuery to hook up the player interface he designed. In this article we’ll run through the code to explain how it works, covering a few caveats along the way.
Here’s the player interface, and the markup for it.

AutoSuggest jQuery Plugin | Drewwilson.com
november 2011
So I needed to add some auto-completing functionality to my project Build It With Me. I figured it would be easy to find a ready-made jQuery plugin to do the work for me. I was wrong.
Naturally I took it upon myself to solve this problem for all of you :) I created this plugin to be as general purpose as possible. As a result it ended up being vastly more customizable than any other jQuery auto-complete plugin. Not only that, I am using actual jQuery. For some reason all the other "jQuery" plugins don't really take advantage of the radness that is jQuery. Consequently, my plugin ended up being dramatically smaller in size (way less code). Just 7kb 8.8kb minified and only 6kb packed. Have fun with it!
AutoSuggest is a very lightweight jQuery plugin that makes auto-completing extremely easy.

Dmitriy Loza - I REMEMBER
october 2011
- Dmitriy Fedorovich, on which American tanks did you fight?
- On Shermans. We called them "Emchas", from M4 [in Russian, em chetyrye]. Initially they had the short main gun, and later they began to arrive with the long gun and muzzle brake. On the front slope armor there was a travel lock for securing the barrel during road marches. The main gun was quite long. Overall, this was a good vehicle but, as with any tank, it had its pluses and minuses. When someone says to me that this was a bad tank, I respond, "Excuse me!" One cannot say that this was a bad tank. Bad as compared to what?

october 2011
This app shows the contents of your locally cached WoT dossier data, which are used by the game to display data in the statistics tab in garage for each tank you drove. The data also contains a lot more additional information, which visualization is not yet implemented by Wargaming.net, e.g. shots, hits, damage dealt, damage taken, spotted tanks, capture/defense points and so on for each of your tanks, also the amounts of different tanks you fragged (useful to find out the missing tanks to get the Master Tanker achievement).
Usage of the app is anonymous, the dossier data cannot be used to identify the submitter. Uploaded dossiers are not published publicly, thus if you do not save or share the link, the data will be forgotten.
