"Chimborazo, Cotopaxi had taken my speech away" - by Wingittofreedom
Spending his afternoons and evenings in the fields though meant he and Spock didn't have as much time to spend together, despite the better weather that would’ve made their exploring expeditions more enjoyable.

So it was with great excitement that Jim received news from Aunt Abigail the following Sunday that he could have the day off after church.

Bounding down the single step out the church doors as soon as the service was over into the burning sunshine outside, Jim went so indecently fast that he was sure the good people of Tarsus would worry for his soul.

Let them worry, Jim thought gleefully, sprinting back to his room, stripping out of his stiff Sunday clothes—bowtie, good shoes, suspenders—and pulling on his jeans and t-shirt and then he was out the door again.

Minutes later he was pounding on Spock’s flimsy door and waiting impatiently as he heard Spock call out something in Vulcan that either meant “Hang on, I’ll be right there,” or “Leave me alone, you crazy sonofabitch.”

Apparently it was the former because Spock pulled open the door a moment later, the neat disdain of his expression belied by amusement gleaming in his eyes.

“Come on!” Jim exclaimed, grabbing Spock’s wrist and trying unsuccessfully to yank him out the door.

“Geez, what do you keep in that robe? Your rock collection?” he asked, huffing. “C’mon, I snuck us sandwiches from the Hall—right out from under Hansen’s nose!” Jim persuaded, holding up the purloined sandwiches in their paper bag, still trying to pull a stubbornly unmoving Spock, whose Vulcan density apparently transcended the merely physical and had crossed into the spiritual realm.

“You’re stubborn as hell, you know that?” Jim informed him, dropping his wrist and putting his hands on his hips.

Spock merely gave him a haughty, long-suffering look and then proceeds out the door at his own pace, the bastard.

Jim groaned. Spock was weird like that. He would follow Jim around, but he seemed to like to do it of his own free will rather than being dragged.

Jim’s still laughing now, eternally youthful. While Leonard loads their bags onto the table, Jim’s entwining his fingers with Spock and tugging his first officer to the bed. At least he knows better than to try and catch Leonard at this hour.

“I’ve always wanted to have you in your childhood bed,” Jim purrs, while the bedsprings creak, old but unchanged since Spock lived here. Leonard rolls his eyes at the cheesy line, already knowing Spock won’t understand.

Indeed, Spock asks, a note of puzzlement to his stoic voice, “Why?”

“Because he’s sick,” Leonard answers. He puts the right spin on the last word to keep Spock from thinking he’s diagnosing Jim as ill. Spock’s getting better at understanding connotations.

He’s no better at resisting Jim. As Leonard turns around to face them, Jim snorts, “Like you didn’t have fun making me scream in my old farmhouse.”

Leonard had a lot of fun doing that. But he was younger then, and besides, “I didn’t brag about it.” He kicks off his boot while he talks, Spock already fishing a silken robe out of his old drawers and Jim pulling his gold tunic over his head. Leonard used to sleep in pajamas too, until he realized that only enticed Jim more.

The Man Who Taught Mr. Spock to Speak Vulcan | A&S Interview | Air & Space Magazine
Though a Universal Translator would be a useful device, and it would be interesting to work on its development, it would have a downside: No one would need to learn another language. This, I think, would lead to a narrowing or rigidity of thinking and a decrease in the appreciation and understanding of other people. Certainly non-IDIC, and I’d say a Qugh.

Vulcan Language - Fanlore
The Vulcan language is a fictional language in the Star Trek universe. From the time of the beginning, Star Trek fans have been inspired to create their own Vulcan language, especially since few Vulcan words or names were ever spoken in the original series.

Kraith Collected - Volume #1 - Surak's Construct.
All of Vulcan philosophy rests on the five main concepts embodied in the Vulcan hand salute which is formed by holding the hand up, and separating the four fingers into a V with two fingers on one side and two on the other while holding the thumb separate.

Category:Vulcan Language Institute - Star Trek Online Geekipedia
Shi'Oren t'Gen-Lis Vuhlkansu, or The Vulcan language Institute as it is said in Federation Standard English, existed on at least two different URL's (or URI's as they're known now) until August 2008, when it dissappeared from it's last known home on an Earthlink user's webspace. We're assuming the user was Mark Gardner, the head of the project and indeed it's primary driving force, but that is just an assumption.

Why it dissappeared, we can only guess. The most obvious possible reason is the lack of funding for the webspace, but another, equally possible reason could simply be a lack of interest or ambition to maintain it, let alone continue it's development. Either way, with the pending release of Star Trek Online we decided that this significant project, a truly scholarly work comprising many years of research and study of canonical resources, would be lost to Role-players specifically and the world in general if we did not step up and do something about it.

Luckily, we were able to access a saved version of the site, and it's from here that we take the Vulcan Language Institute, update it's formatting and mark-up to suit this new Wiki environment, and present it here. Attempts were made to contact Mr. Gardner or any member of the project, but were unsuccessful, so we do this without explicit permission. We do, however, firmly believe that they would not want this to fade silently into the blackness of space so we assume implied permission until we can get that other, better kind.

Text is taken verbatim from the archives and only edited to suit formatting and to avoid ambiguation. Occasionaly we have split some pages into more meaningful sections, or retitled them for the same reason. It is my hope that one day the project may be advanced here, but for now we will present the information we have in the best possible way that we can.

Nen-vulunaya, or First Impressions - by andloawhatsit
“It is a truth universally acknowledged,” said Amanda Grayson, more or less to herself while she fastened Michael’s safety restraint, then turned to ensure Spock’s was fastened as well (it was, of course, he being fastidious), “that a seven-year-old child, in possession of a fine Vulcan heritage, must be in want of a fiancée.” In a matter of hours, Spock and T’Pring would formalize their betrothal, and the S'chn T'gai family — Amanda, Sarek, the teenaged Sybok, the infant Michael, and of course, the child Spock — was readying itself to pile into the aircar that would take them to their ancestral place of Koon-ut-kal-if-fee.

“Mother,” said Spock, “I know of no other species which bonds as Vulcans do — as I am about to do; therefore it is not a universal truth.” He had been the centre of attention all day, petted and brushed and outfitted in fine robes sewn from handwoven cloth, posed in the garden while his mother took pictures with her holo-imager, but the pleasure of such treatment could no longer hold back his growing apprehension. However illogically, he soothed this feeling by pestering his mother.

Paper Tigers - by ThereBeWhalesHere
In the seats behind him, a host of stuffy cultural and military advisors trade final notes of caution, but Jim has heard quite enough notes of caution by now, after months preparing for the impending negotiation. He has been on the receiving end of his father’s serious scowl, his mother’s concerned, tight smile. He has sat through the royal advisors’ hours of etiquette training, and he swears he knows by now.

He knows that Vulcans can be unpredictable. They’re pure passion, pure will, pure fire, the once-enemy of everything Jim and his family holds dear, and any offence could make them rebuke an alliance with Earth forever. Given the machines of war Vulcans have at their disposal, the Terrans need this alliance, or at least this friendship. The shaky armistice of 30 years ago is no longer enough.

So Jim has been told to remain out of the way, to observe and not participate in the upcoming talks. He understands, for the most part. He’s still only 27, and he can be full of fire himself. Even bringing Jim along is a risk, according to his brother the crown prince.

Never mind that Jim is Earth’s second son, or that he has spent his whole life observing negotiations. Never mind that he thinks he might know how to handle a couple of hot-headed extraterrestrials after that run-in with the Tellarites last year. But when it comes down to it, his parents are king and queen of the most influential planet in the quadrant, and even Jim has to listen to them sometimes. Besides, they want this to be his first step into a new role: Earth’s first official ambassador to Vulcan since the end of their war 30 years ago.

Provided this all goes well.
