"Think we just established that I'll stay with you always," John says gently, and he watches Sherlock's jaw do something complicated. John's usual blend of affection and fascination crests and breaks and settles.

A lifetime of things that were never quite finished, but were still complete.

John is given a chance to take the fight to Moriarty. You know what they say about whoever fights monsters...

They cut him open and take his hardly-beating heart out of him and replace it with something golden and shining and better. They give Sherlock a mechanical heart.

“Yes, so did I,” said Sherlock. “Then I met you.” He laid his arm next to John's, noting the similarities and differences between them, and realising that they had almost exactly the same depth of hue. John was just as in love with him as he was back.

Several months after setting his brother loose on the trail of Moriarty's network, Mycroft Holmes receives a tip about John Watson, who has made himself scarce after the Fall. What he finds has the potential to render Sherlock's mission a no-win scenario.
