The National Audit Office has reported on how government is fulfilling its commitments to promote the transparency of public information. The report recognises the strength of the strategic case for greater transparency, and highlights progress across government in fulfilling most of its initial commitments. However, government needs a better understanding of costs, benefits and use to assess whether transparency is meeting its objectives of increasing accountability, supporting service improvement and stimulating economic growth.

White House's new 'digital gov' strategy, incl comprehensive #opendata, content, app API standards: #egov #gov20

Today marks the launch of that Digital Government Strategy (PDF / HTML5).

At its core, the strategy takes a coordinated, information- and customer-centric approach to changing how the government works and delivers services to the American people. Designing for openness from the start – making open data the default for government IT systems and embracing the use of web APIs – enables us to more easily deliver information and services through multiple channels, including mobile, and engage the public and America’s entrepreneurs as partners in building a better government.

The Digital Government Strategy complements several initiatives aimed at building a 21st century government that works better for the American people. These include Executive Order 13571 (Streamlining Service Delivery and Improving Customer Service),5 Executive Order 13576 (Delivering an Efficient, Effective, and Accountable Government),6 the President’s Memorandum on Transparency and Open Government,7 OMB Memorandum M-10-06 (Open Government Directive),8 the National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace (NSTIC),9 and the 25-Point Implementation Plan to Reform Federal Information Technology Management (IT Reform).10

The CTO and CIO of the U.S. government have announced a new digital roadmap for the U.S. that encourages the further use of open data, and tries to inspire developers to work for the government...The new roadmap is centered on five ideas:

Open Data as the new default
Anywhere, anytime on any device
Everything should be an API
Make government data social
Change the meaning of social participation
