"Despite their colorful labels depicting happy cows and bucolic red barns, those inexpensive bottles and cartons come to us with an incalculably high human price tag."

2009 CSA Farm Directory
december 2009 by patrickrhone
The Twin Cities region is fortunate to be home to a thriving Community Supported Agriculture movement. This innovative model for getting food from the field to the fork has existed in the Twin Cities area for two decades. We now have a solid, growing community of producers and consumers who are working together to develop a sustainable food and farming system.
The farms listed in the 2009 Edition of the Twin Cities Region Community Supported Agriculture Farm Directory have paid a fee to the Land Stewardship Project to be included. The Land Stewardship Project is not a certification agency for Community Supported Agriculture farms and does not guarantee customer satisfaction.

Why Chipotle Insists on Humanely Raised Meat | Newsweek Environment | Newsweek.com
december 2009 by patrickrhone
Chipotle does buy meat from large processors as well. Tyson, which banned the use of most antibiotics in its chickens last year, created a naturally raised operation just for Chipotle. Chickens destined for the restaurants are raised separately from the rest of its stock by 100 growers in southwest Arkansas. Fed an all-vegetarian diet and never given antibiotics, the birds are allowed more space than conventionally raised hens to move about.

Community Supported Agriculture
december 2009 by patrickrhone
Community Supported Agriculture consists of a community of individuals who pledge support to a farm operation so that the farmland becomes, either legally or spiritually, the community's farm, with the growers and consumers providing mutual support and sharing the risks and benefits of food production. Typically, members or "share-holders" of the farm or garden pledge in advance to cover the anticipated costs of the farm operation and farmer's salary. In return, they receive shares in the farm's bounty throughout the growing season, as well as satisfaction gained from reconnecting to the land and participating directly in food production. Members also share in the risks of farming, including poor harvests due to unfavorable weather or pests. By direct sales to community members, who have provided the farmer with working capital in advance, growers receive better prices for their crops, gain some financial security, and are relieved of much of the burden of marketing.
