WARC, Web ARChive file format
24 days ago by eosuchian
The WARC (Web ARChive) format specifies a method for combining multiple digital resources into an aggregate archival file together with related information. The WARC format is a revision of the Internet Archive's ARC File Format [ARC_IA] format that has traditionally been used to store "web crawls" as sequences of content blocks harvested from the World Wide Web. The WARC format generalizes the older format to better support the harvesting, access, and exchange needs of archiving organizations. Besides the primary content currently recorded, the revision accommodates related secondary content, such as assigned metadata, abbreviated duplicate detection events, and later-date transformations.

Web Archiving Policies and Practice in the US 2012
24 days ago by eosuchian
Columbia University Libraries has invited participants from over 20 US academic and research libraries to share perspectives on topics relevant to their own experience, including: institutional objectives in developing a web archive assumptions about the long-term sustainability of local web archives the way in which web collections are scoped policies regarding permissions and control of content assumptions regarding the expected uses and users of archived content how those assumptions affect decisions about presentation and access As an outcome, we hope the meeting may lead to an articulation of a small number of model programs for web archiving, and development of “best practices” for documenting program elements.
Per Michael Stoller: "Columbia's "Web Archiving Curator" is Alex Thurman - at2186@columbia.edu - I believe he works for Kate Harcourt. He and Kate, as well as Pamela Graham and Bob Wolven will be at the Columbia meeting."

Images from Columbia University’s Biggert Collection. From the site: “The vast majority of the images below have been cropped, cleaned and variously doctored for display purposes, with an intent towards highlighting the range of letterform/font and design layouts. The underlying documents are invoices (most), letters, postcards, shipping records and related business and advertising letterhead ephemera from the mid-1800s to the 1930s.”
