Arthur is not Uther's son, he's Nimueh's (or magic's, or the Old Religion's -- something related to the secret reality of his conception). This gets revealed and suddenly his status changes and everything goes into political upheaval. (You could leave Uther out altogether if it's after his death/at Arthur's coronation that the reveal is made.)

OP would adore long fic, but is also open to shorter pieces just looking at one aspect of what might happen.

Inspired by but not directly related to the vid here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COYykvG3YsE) of 30 Seconds to Mars' song "This Is War", and especially the part at 1:30, where it seems to be characterising the dragon (the prophet), Morgana (the liar) and Gaius (the honest) by the ways in which they relate to Uther. I'd like to see Uther thinking of conversations he's had with each of them (and maybe how he regrets the way he reacted/listened/didn't listen in retrospect).

Summary: As future king, Arthur constantly has to prove himself worthy of the throne to his father (which i think he did many many times, but apparently it's still not enough..). As for Morgana, she always had a free mind, never had Uther's vision of the world. But there are no doubts that Uther loves them with all his heart. He can't help but being who he is even if he's sometimes (many times actually xD) wrong.

Uther escapes from Camelot to find her and make her see reason; when he finds her, she's vulnerable because Morgause is on the brink of death, and lets go to Uther's sweet voice. They have very rough sex and in the end, after Morgana realizes what she has done, she kills Uther out of shame and ultimately hate.
